Man, I wish I'd had known....

Hey All,

I was invited to a new home game through a guy from work. A little about the format:

Texas Holdem, they start at .50/$1 for the first couple of hours. Then they double the limits to 1/2. A few hours later, 2/4. Then at about 2am, they go to 2/4 No Limit.

So here I am... I know less than half the guys at the table. Playing about break-even for the night... The skill level at the table is relatively low. I'm just getting out-drawn on a lot of hands, but still holding my own. One guy finishes the limit portion of the night about $400 up. A few people quite a bit down.

4 people (of 9 total) stay for the NL portion. Mr. Moneybags, myself, one of the friends that I brought, and the host. My friend busts out to Mr. $ and leaves. Host busts out. So I'm setup to play heads up against this guy. He is a new player, just happened to hit the right hands at the right time. I'm led to believe that he is a College student... not employed full time. The money that he won should be useful to him.

At this point it's 4:30 am... I'm still relatively fresh and confident that I could outplay this guy heads up. Once we got to NL, he was a lot more passive.. Plus he (as well as most of the other guys) had been drinking... My thoughts were that it may not be a good thing to crush him because:

a) he's a new player... we can get his money next time. Losing it all now might discourage him and scare him away. Let him have his night.
b) I'm new to this game... potential for many juicy nights in the future. If I dominate now, I might not get invited back.

So I played a few hands... no significant change in money. I cash out $25 up for the night and go home.

I was happy with my decision... until...

Monday morning at work, I found out that Mr. $ and the host went out afterwards (5:30am) to the convenience store and used over $150 of his winnings to buy porn!

wow.

Man, I wish I'd had known.

next time: no mercy!

I'm interested in hearing what other people would have done.

hork.

Intersting structure. It's like racing around against each other on skateboards and then at 2am changing over to NASCAR.

Played optimal poker at all times and busted the guy?

    Don't overthink the meta-game.

Losing players will be back. Quite often *beacuse* they have recently had a losing session. In my experience, you genereally do *not* have to go out of your way to try to keep a fish "on the hook".

The golf pro said in Rounders says it best.

"There's plenty more where that came from."

  • Exactly, as someone else wrote if they are playing the money, then it is fair game. He probably would have tried to take it away from you. LOL at least they could have bought some high quality porn with their winnings
