Which Sklansky book should I buy...?

Hey all, I've been looking at "Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players" and "Tournament Poker for Advanced Players," both by David Skalnsky, and I can't decide which would be a better use of my money. I wanted to get the opinion from a few people who have read both. If my skill level is important, I'm a consistant winner in low limit ring games and tournaments with $5 and $10 buy-ins. Thanks anyone who's read these both.

  • do you want to play ring games or tournaments??
you'll be hard pressed to find anyone that has anything bad to say about either
  • I play ring games for some steady income, but overall tournaments are much more fun so I'd want to get better at those. And I know neither is a bad book, I just wanna know which would be more appropriate, or if i should read one first and then the other.
  • Should I buy an apple or an orange? Which do you like better? I don't know. Which one do you think I'll like?

Buy a watermelon. Get Harrington on Hold'em Vol 1 & 2. Strictly hold'em NL tourneys. What a rush!
  • You cant go wrong with either, but HPFAP will give you more skills, and strategies specifically to holdem, meanwhile TPFAP is a very good book, but its content is more geared to "differences" or changes in your ring game play opposed to tournaments. So, my suggestion would be to start with HPFAP, and then move onto TPFAP.
  • I guess under 17 days pays out...

Whether you should get HPFAP or TPFAP only depends on whether you anticipate playing mostly mid-stakes (probably 10-20 and up) limit holdem cash games, or poker tournaments.

  • get both :D
also throw HOH v1 + v2 in there as well
  • Alright, thanks guys. I didn't even know about Harrington's books, but it looks like a good read.

I think I set the line WAY too high.
  • I was waiting for that.  It was pretty funny.  Might have been 17 hours.

  • go ahead and remove it. i got my answer.

Actually I checked, it was 6 hrs. :)  Although technically the thread was asking which Sklansky books would be recommended (not poker books in general)... :)
  • Is the only place to get Sklanskys books online?

Ive been to 4 Chapters/Indigos looking for them and none stocked any, yet they had shelves upon shleves of Helmuths books.

Is ordering online the only way to go?
  • amazon.ca
  • and *only* amazon.ca has the watermelons!

If you go to Chapters the store will order any book you want free of charge. All you have to do is wait a week or two until they receive it and then they'll call you for you to go pick it up.

Ya, I was turned on to amazon by a recommendation on this site and I can honestly say I will never buy another book from Chapters again. The books come quickly, the selection is unreal and the books are usually much cheaper then chapters not to mention free shipping if you order over a certain amount. I ordered 3 Sklansky books from there and as a matter of fact I just ordered two Harrington books form amazon this afternoon.

My wife also ordered 3 baby books so I'm going to laugh if when someones browsing and it shows what other books the person who ordered this book ordered as pregnancy books.
