Poker Kings

i liked the show.
was interesting to see a peak at the lives outside of poker for some players.

i also thought it was interesting to note that, aside from helmuth perhaps, the most "successfull" player was the one who had the most balance in his life...poker, family, comittments...and support around him.

  • I watched it as well. Very, very interesting! I can't believe how different people's lives are, I'm glad to see that Hellmuth, even though he's a brat, puts his kids as a priority
  • Loved it. I'm glad I taped it, so I can watch it one more time.

    Amen.

I guess this was a one-off, not a series, but oh well. Too bad it's not a series.
  • Great Show, I can't wait for the reality TV Show CASINO!
  • yeah, I love Hellmuth. He even talks smack when he's not at the table. One day I will take him down a peg... one day...
  • Also,
I thought this show was going to be a weekly thing, but I guess not. Just a 1 hour documentary combining 1 year of 5 ppls live all in one?
  • Awesome show.

I've never really seen the behind the scenes, everyday lives of top pro players. It's interesting to see the contrast between their lifestyles. A couple of them on the tournament trail, barely breaking even... while others who have the luxury of picking which tournaments to play in (Phil & Varkonyi) and can afford to spend more time with their families.

    hork.

i cant wait :D i'm taping this one for sure :D

    go Mark Burnett go :D
  • One of the best parts was when they followed the poor addicted degenerate gambler around--Garry Bush, I believe. I can't believe he let them put his life story to air. He was at a tournament, and couldn't afford the money to fly home to WITNESS THE BIRTH OF HIS CHILD.

    ROFLMAO

Then, his girlfriend leaves the newborn at home and flies out to visit him. She gets off the plane, and the first thing she says is: "Are you playing tonight?" He says just for an hour or two while she sleeps, and she's clearly not impressed.

Personally, I don't need to be Hellmuth or Varkonyi with their $1 million-plus yearly tournament cashes. I'd take Carlo Citrone's kind of life. A cool $500,000 or $600,000 a year, on a fairly consistent basis. Beautiful home, beautiful cars, and all the time in the world to live life like he wants to.

He says he's lucky--very lucky--and he's very, very right. Obviously, the man has skills, but I think he hits a lot of flops, and I think he knows it.

Simon Trumper strikes me as being a very good player who's had some very bad luck.

    Hellmuth is still a wanker.

  • at the end,

one of the guys got sent to jail for smuggling cigarettes and his poker career on hold...

    cant remember who though? :?:
  • Did anyone tape/PVR this show? If so, I would be sooooo grateful if they could mpeg'ify it and share :)
  • Bry - I PVR'd it. I'll see if I can MPEG it for you. not sure if I have the necessary equipment though... I'll let you know.

    hork.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that was Carlo Citrone. I forgot about that. Guess he's not so lucky after all...

LOL  and i thought i was confused

he's talking about Gary Bush

    all :!: :!: :!: underscore :!: :!: :!: aces is not Gary Bush
unless he likes to talk in the 3rd person
  • I'm not Gary Bush, and I'm pretty happy about that, despite his win! I think the confusion came from CO congatulating Gary Bush, who unfortunately doesn't post here.

As an aside, Phil Hellmuth is making final tables again this year on a fairly consistent basis. He's still the same old Phil though. In a hand against 'the magician', the magician raised quite a bit preflop with AJo. Phil sensed a bit of weakness and came over the top with junk, which would set the magician in if he called.

The magician called, and Phil was very upset. He couldn't believe the magician made the call. Phil said something like "In a couple of years you'll learn not to make that call, kid." And then he muttered about some kid calling off all his chips with AJo for a while.

    Lol.

I guess from Phil's point of view, it couldn't *possibly* have been that Esfandiari got a read on Hellmuth and made a good call.

It's true that Phil has taken quite a few beats this year when he has had the best of it (and a few significant hands where he was on the other side of the bad beat), but I think his constant belly-aching, whether or not it's an act, hurts his tournament game overall more than it helps.

  • lol, Phil hates it when people don't do what they are "supposed" to do. You're right though he is consistently making final tables again.

yeah...dont ya just hate it when that happens  :mrgreen:

    LMFAO
  • I liked the show, but then as my wife points out I seem to like anything to do with poker.
