I have an idea, who is intersested?

All this talk about the law and poker is very informative....and I really like the discussions. But I have an idea..... :D.....

We all know people that own tables, we all know people who own chips, we all know how to deal, right?

So, here is my question,

If let's say 100 guy's got together to play poker for $100, and some TD's were to get together find a venue free of charge on private property(which is possible), some of us TD's have affiliations with on line poker rooms that can supply tables (which I am sure we can get for free) , I know that Terry and I now own 4000 chips (I am sure that other TD's own more), a couple of us can bring BBQ's, everyone bring something for the BBQ (food, drinks etc.) , I am sure we can find volunteers to BBQ and serve food (friends, wife's/girlfriends), so all that being said.......

There is no profit, no rentals, no fees, no expenses (other than personal), no gain other than winning....Legal?....I think (place ScottyZ disclaimer here)...

Would anyone be interested in helping me organize this? It will obviously be a lot of work, but I am willing, because I would like the forum members to get together and play a large event, LIVE, for bragging rights and such.

Anyone?

  • sounds nice enough, i think the biggest obstacle would be locale. if it's private (ie someones home) how many would/could they be willing to let into their home? That's a HUGE imposition.

2nd, if it weren't someones home, it would have to be large....and free for it to be legal.
  • I have PM'd Spence. I could help with this. The numbers game is an important one. I would think would just as fun to have CPF Day/Night 2 with some qualifers (ie. number posts) and therefore limiting the number of friends getting together. Anyway, I can do a lot in London...means travelling for most. Though, I do think that anything with 100 friends might generate some outside interest...if you kept reasonable then we maybe able to make it fly.
  • Sounds like a request to get the Pokerforum.ca Invitational #2 going...I'm between London and Toronto and would be willing to help.

  • I am going to talk to Joel (from newyorkpoker), Josh (holdemforhire) and Noah (yorkpoker) about this. I think that if all parties that are interested in helping can set a date to get together and discuss means and possibilities of this tournament, we can make this fly. Players obviously won't be a problem.

If everyone that is interested can pm me with what days and times of the week are good for them, we can find a meeting place between Windsor and T.O to meet and organize this.

  • I have just found out that as well as "rake free" and "profit free" that there can be no "pay to play". This tournament will have to be like the Degree Poker Championship, were sponsors pay for everything, players play for free and the the whole thing has to be random. I still believe that we can get sponsors and make this work. I am going to call the AGCO here in Toronto and try to schedule a meeting to talk to them about how we can have our own "Degree" game, cause if they can do it, there is no reason that we can't.

There have been several suggestions on how the TD's that are interested can meet up, msn chat/phone conference etc. I am going to look at all aspects to accommodate everyone, please be patient as I believe that the first step will be me meeting with the Gaming Commision.

There are already a couple of TD's on board, if you are not a TD and are still interested, please pm me. If you are a TD that is interested, but has yet to contact me, please do so. The more the merrier.

    Regards, Rob Spence
  • if you are thinkin on running this in july anytime
    i'm willing to help
but in augst i'll be working the whole month :'(

this is a great idea :)
  • I don't want to promise that it would happen anytime soon, as the first priority is to get the AGCO on board for help, they are not as bad as everyone thinks. After all, some of them are poker enthusiasts like us.

For this to work, we will need the following FREE OF CHARGE......

*Chips (which most of us have after sloth's liquidation) if people are willing, we just take count and keep track of who has what chips in the tourney

*Tables, I know that some of us own tables, and some of us have affiliations with pokersites that have tables (ie: newyorkpoker.com)

*Dealers, do we really need them other than for the final table, and at that point I think that one of the players good deal the table

*Food/Drinks/Munchies, if everyone brings a little something, we should be alright, kinda like going to Grama's and you have to bring the potato salad

*Venue, this could be tuff, we have to find a place willing to give us a room big enough for at least 10 tables, and make sure that there is nothing readily accessible for sale in order to cover everyones ass

*Prizes, have to be donated by sponsors, Trophies/Prize money**/Hats/Shirts etc.

If anyone here reading this, has any means to help provide any of this, please pm me or email me at info@boltonpoker.com But like I said before, this will not happen until such times as I have spoken to the Gaming Commision.

Is there a thread on the first one? And if we can get this off the ground, could we call it the Pokerforum.ca Invitational #2? Who has say on that?
  • I went through the process with the AGCO and they are not interested or involved in anything except Casinos. They referred me to the RCMP "Illegal Gaming Division". There I received the same information that is being spread around. As long as there is no "cost" to the player to participate it is not under their jurisdiction. Even the bars can not charge a surcharge for food or beverage. That would be considered a charge to participate. Beyond that they do not care. It is much like Bingo in the old days (sorry to sound like my dad did). Though it is illegal they would turn a blind eye to the charity and lodge fundraisers unless it got out of hand.
A bunch of guys self organizing would likely fall under that category today.
  • i have about 6,000 customized clay chips I can lend out for this.

I have an "in", kinda, my good friend Jeff (metro cop) works with the AGCO on a daily basis. He has already introduced me to a lady named Jamie. Altough I have only spoke to Jamie at the AGCO, they seemed very willing to sit down and explain stuff to me about the laws about gaming, and how I can hold a game that will not break the law.

Thank you, that would be greatly appreciated.
  • I am always game.

You know that. I can arrange a venue for either 60 or 80, likely free of charge. Beyond that I am mostly useless. Plus I am getting married in 3 weeks, so I am limited outside of arranging the place for you. It's in Toronto, in the North, either east or west.

If you tell me which is preferable, I will see what I can do.
  • let's pretend I have a huge hall that I normally rent out for $500.

Could you approach me and say "Hey, I'll buy your shoelace off you for $500 if you gimme your hall for 6 hours"?

    MMMMM.....is the shoe a 9-10? Cause I'll take the shoe for $500!!!!!
  • This is what I need, all the Tournament Director's, and players that are interested in helping out, please email me at info@boltonpoker.com Things look like they are shaping up, but still need some help and input.

What I would like is for all that are interested, is to have a meeting so that I can present some idea's, along with you presenting some idea's. My schedule is pretty flexible. If everyone can email me with 3 or 4 dates that are good and what area you are from, once I have that, I will pick a date and a location that can and will suit everyone who is interested in helping make this pokerforum invitational happen.

  • for the record, I dont really have a hall..it was hypothetical as a workaround of the loooooooong arm of the law.
  • Sunday July 10th.

On this date I would like everyone interested in helping organize this to get together and have a meeting. My vehicle can fit 5 comfortably, I figure that we can all car pool to somewhere around stpboy and have a late lunch.

It would be great if we could have a rep from every poker group on the forum, GTA, Bolton, Westside, York, KW etc. I think that the more involved, the better our chances of getting more stuff for free.

Anyone interested in meeting please call me at 905-857-4500.
  • I just want everyone to know that I haven't forgotten about this, I am still working it out.

Once things start to come to life I will keep you all in the loop.

  • Rob,

Msg me or call my cell - I can play again - all wedding stuff is over with now (except cleaning up the new apartment - that seems to go on forever)
