Canadian Poker Tour
One of things I am working on is a Canadian Poker Tour which would somehow crown an annual "Player of the Year." Without giving away my thoughts (for now) I am curious to know what this group thinks such an animal would look like?
In particular, I am interested in your thoughts regarding:
(1) How points are awarded;
(2) What sort of prize would be ideal; and
(3) How an online poker room could be involved.

PokerStars ran the Canadian Championship of Online Poker last year. If this is an annual event, maybe that could be part of the "tour".
Plus it seems like PokerStars has been agreeable to running these sorts of "special" tournaments on request. I believe the CCOOP started out as a couple of guys in Canada who got in touch with PokerStars about it.
I'm not sure about the points system, but a few general principles which might be good are:
1. Consistent high finishes (though not necessarily wins) should be rewarded. It should be worth more to finish top 10 (out of 200, say) five times, than winning one of those tournaments, and then finishing in the bottom 10 in the other four.
2. You should not be too disadvantaged by missing one (or a number) of tour tournaments. It should be okay for someone from Halifax to miss a Vancouver tournament. Or for someone who doesn't play online to miss online tournaments.
And don't you think we should try to get a tournament at Diamond Tooth Gertie's as part of the tour? It doesn't get much more Canadian than that.

You mean there is something other than cash?
Ummm...poker stuff I guess... a table or chips or something...or a trip to Vegas or AC
A big trophy shaped like Elvis.

Or what about:
Wayne Gretzky comes over to the winner's house for a game of road hockey.
As a serious suggestion for a prize (besides the obvious: cash), how about a trophy, and something to wear akin to the WSOP bracelet? Maybe a ring?

"200, 180, 160, 140, 120 100, 80, 60, and 40 points will be awarded in order of finish. The WSOP main event stands in a class alone and will have a multiplier of 3, the WPT 25K event will have a 2.5 multiplier, all other 10K events will be multiplied by 2, and the 5K events up to $9,999 will have a 1.5 multiplier"
I like the mulitple idea which gives more weight to bigger tourneys which in theory should attract the better players. Kinda like golf or tennis and winning majors or grandslams.
It also might be a good idea to take the *number* of entrants into account for such a multiplier in addition to (or possibly even instead of) the amount of the buy-in. I'm assuming we're not going to have too many huge (over $1000 say) buy-in tournaments in Canada any time soon, so maybe number of players would be a better proxy for the competitiveness level of a tournament.

I would definitely be interested in playing the live and online tournaments.
Maybe the winner of the bigger buy in tournaments wins a place at the final table/tourny plus cash.?
I am pumped! Lets do it!! If I can be of any help let me know..:!:
just found this thread
hmmm...how about a ring...like the SuperBowl ring...
Canadian Poker PLAYER of the YEAR 2004/2005...etc
or a trophy? cariboo? beaver? maple leaf? :?:
It is more difficult to take your trophy to the casino to brag without it being obvious what you are doing. LOL
It would be cool to get the online casinos involved, but you would have to ensure that only canadian's are allowed into those events. It would be a kick in the knickers for someone from the states to be CPOTY. (or maybe you would want that?!).
The best thing would be to identify the top 5 or so events in canada and let people know those are the events that are going to be considered. Fact is there are not that many events in canada to begin with ... and any serious player is likely to go on the US/worldwide tour rather then playing at the small canadian events.
hmmmm
.kw
i'll take ring over bracelet...
i dunno...there's just something about bracelets that's funny
HaHa...yeah carry the trophy around...make a grand entrance
I think that maybe the 'major' tournaments at Port Perry, Brantford, and Rama should be considered, if there are any.
The tough part would be giving each region of Canada a fairly equal number of 'points' tournaments to play in. Obviously, this would come down to how many tourneys are in fact available in each region.
If this was just an online thing, then 'live tournament distribution' wouldn't be a problem, but it seems to me that you want there to be a strong 'live' component as well, which I think is great.
Maybe the K/W boys could host a slightly larger multi as one of the events?
As for prizes, how about sending the first place or two to a premilinary WSOP tourney next year, like say the 2K buy-in NL? I may be reaching a bit here... that's a hefty prize, that would require some sort of a sponsorship deal I guess. I don't know very much about this stuff.
A ring, watch, or bracelet would be nice instead of/in addition to a tournament entry.
Maybe a Regina tournament trip instead of WSOP? More affordable, and Canadian. Maybe Casino Regina would subsidize part of this prize, seeing as they'd get quite a bit of promotion out of the deal, directly to their target audience.
Random thoughts. Great idea, Dave, and I'm looking forward to playing in it, no matter what the format or prize.

In Ontario, you must be 19 to enter a government run casino, and 18 to buy a lottery ticket.

Maybe run a couple of tourneys in Casinos like Rama.
Possibly get a deal with PS and get them to hose some tourneys for us!
