Odds of flopping two pair or trips?

Hey Dave, my question is what are the odds of any 2 random cards flopping 2 pair or trips? I'm asking this because often I'm in the blinds in a limit game and there's a lot of money in the pot, I'm wondering what kind of pot odds I need to justify calling with pretty much any 2 cards? Thanks.

The odds of flopping 2 pair is about 1 in 21.03 and a set about 1 in 47.32. The odds of flopping AT LEAST 2 pair is about 1 in 13.11. You will need A LOT of limpers.

Given that you have 2 random cards (of different rank)...

You will flop 2 pair (using both your cards)...
= 3*3*44 / 19600 = 0.020204082 = ~1 in 49.5 times

You can also make 2 pair using only 1 of your hole cards (not as helpful)...
= 2*3*11*6 / 19600 = 0.020204082 = ~1 in 49.5 times

You will make trips...
= 2*3*44 / 19600 = 0.013469388 = ~1 in 74 times

You will make a full house....
= 2*3*3 / 19600 = 0.000918367 = ~1 in 1089 times

AND you will flop quads...
= 2 / 19600 = 0.000102041 = 1 in 9800 times

Out of these 5 situations I would consider the second example (where the board pairs) to be of "little" use... Tread carefully!

in total you will hit one of these hands...
= 0.054897959 = ~1 in 18.2 times


Note: I've left out the chances of flopping a straight as this is dependant on the gap between your cards and their rank...

I want to reiterate that I based my answer on the literal wording of the question. For example, If you held 95o and the flop was KKK, using my calculations, while correct, would probably not be considered a set you would be happy to play.

Given that you have 2 random cards (of different rank)...

Mickey's calculations are much more meaningful in that you most likely will know what you will do with a pocket pair. Thanks Mickey.

As regards the original post, in a limit game you will NEVER have the odds to go shooting for two pair. But, that's not what you are interested in. You are much more concerned about the odds you have of winning the hand.
