Any legal conflicts with playing poker in bars?

Hi There
I wanted to start hosting my satellite games at a bar.
What are the legalities if any? Can the bar advertise - can I advertise with a catchy name like KWSOP does?
Any thoughts?

  • You should do a search on the forum for 'laws' or something similar.

It's a very sticky situation, as the bars are under ACGO rules (as is the gaming side of things).

Be careful, do your homework and you'll be fine.
  • Check out this thread, there are a few links in it.

If you scroll through the home games section, I beleive that there are a few more. you can also go to the AGCO website, and search poker legalities.
  • I play at a bar on saturdays, the owner even bought us a table! but we never display any cash and he does not advertise. as long as the bar is not getting any money from your game it should be alright its the same if you have a home game its okay as lonfg as you don't make any money off it
  • If the bar owner wants to take that risk that is great, but it only takes 1 a%%hole to open his mouth.

The law states, in laymen's terms, that you are not allowed to hold a game of chance for any prize(s).

I know everybody is doing it, but everyone is also doing it and thinking, "Yeah, but if we hide the prize pool, it's legal!"

If the AGCO and the RCMP show up at your game, you can say.."Look no money, only chips", but if they show they know, and they will not walk away without somebody in the back seat of their car.
  • bar has to be careful..

they could lose their liquor licence if proven to allowing gambling on the premises
