A couple hands from a Home tourney

A friend of mine hosted and organized a 30 player tournament on Sunday and it went off real well.    A couple hands from the final table:

Started with 8 players, 6 left, top 4 get paid.    There were about 40,000 chips at the final table.  Blinds where 100/200.

Loose player (Player 1) in early position with about 3000 in chips pushes all in, and its to me.   I look down and see i'm holding KK, and have about 5800 in chips.    Great hand, time to push, knowing the guy who just went all in would do it on anything.

Now, the surprise to me was, that right behind me, I get another player push in (Player 2), he's holding AA.     Damn it!    Player 1 turns over K9, so there goes on of my outs...   Damn it again!

Flop comes 9 X X, so Player 1 pairs up and still has a shot.   Then comes the turn, K!! and i make my trips, lucky hit.    Next card helps no one and i take a massive pot.

Question is, with AA, would you ever consider folding in this spot?   I told him he played it right, but have some questions.   With it being so close to the bubble, would you fold and keep your stack?   Player 2 has about 6000 in chips, after losing had enough for the next blind and that was it.

Hand 2, and i am pretty sure i played it wrong.   Heads up, and i am the big blind, holding A7.  Blinds are 250/500, and I am ahead by about 3000 in chips at that point.  Player 3 calls the blind, and i raise 1500. He calls and we see a flop.   The flop come AAT, with 2 hearts.      I like this flop.

Player 3 leads out and bets 3000, i think he's trying to steal it.    Somewhat tight player but has opened up a bit as the table got smaller.   I call his raise, slowplaying my tip Aces, maybe a bit worried my kicker isn't great if he has an aces as well.

Turn card comes out a black Q.   Again he bets, this time 6000.    Again, i see it as a steal.   I don't think he would have originally limped with TT, and so i push all in.    He flips up KJ, and already has the straight.   I get no help on the river, and its his pot, and basically the game, as i'm short stacked.   I double up once and steal some blinds, but he gets KK against my 77 to take me out.

I think in hindsight i should have push all in after the flop?    Any other errors in my strategy in this one?

I dont think AA would ever think of folding, esp since he knew you guys were going to be committed to the pot with your all ins. What could he have put you on, a set of 9s? He probably puts you on a pair or high cards in which case he has both of you. You're lucky to squeak out of the hand ahead with only 1 out!!

    Second hand.

I would have pushed him/rest of the players all in because i've been screwed with a flush draw before.

I would never fold A-A in that spot. He KNOWS that he is a big favourite (or, rarely, a tie). That is the power of A-A. It is ALWAYS a big favourite.

Ugh. Raise is too small. If you are going to move on this pot pre-flop give him a tough decision. You offered him 1000 into a pot of 2000. Easy call. And, with A-7 you aren’t keen to have guys enter the pot with “easy calls.”

I move in. If I am beat, I am beat. I am not going to fold anyway. What I do not want to have happen is what DID happen… namely, allow variance to work against you. You have won a nice pot, stack it up.

I don’t hate your slow play, but what will he bet again on the turn? Not too many hands if he has bluffed. Take his chips and take him out is my preferred play.
  • I would never fold A-A in that spot
Is there ever a situation in which you would fold AA preflop?

dude, you are taking 'hole cards' way too literally. is this another cultural thing? :D
  • Dammit i walked right in this one. :'(
  • The only place I would EVER fold A-A pre-flop is if winning/losing THIS hand is IRRELEVANT to my result. So, if I am BIG stack on the bubble in a super-satellite I would consider folding. If accumulating chips is still your goal, then NEVER fold A-A.
