My First $200+15, $350,000 PokerStars Gaurenteed

This will be the highest buy-in for a No-Limit tournament that I have ever played in.
I know this tournament is going to be full of sharks. I guess what I'm wondering is, if any of you have played in these stakes of a NL Tourney, and if possible, any tips to stay calm and focused?, I believe I'm pretty good at keeping myself composed, but as the blinds go up and the people begin to become elminated, it will be tough, with a lot of money on the line.

Also, as the blinds become tighter and tigher, anyone have any good tips on how to "manufacture" chips at the later stages of the tournament?

Thanks guys

  • Yes, there are a lot of sharks. But, there are a lot of minnows too.

Advice? Don't look to make a massive change or a look for a "magic bullet." Relax, enjoy, play YOUR game, and (most importantly) learn so that you are better the next time.
  • Yup agree with Dave

Play your game.. Take your time there's no rush! Lots of fish among the sharks so pick your spots..

    Good Luck
  • Good luck and keep us posted. Whats your name on PS for any rail birds?
  • GL, I have yet to play iin the PS $200+15 yet. But I have played in other tourneys like it.

I think a lot of the player qualify via satelites, so they will be just like yourself. Most will play very tight because they feel their is so much money up for stake, they can't make amistake on a bluff or something like that. So they key to winning is to continue playing your own game. Just like the sharks, you can't be afraid to die if you want to make it far. Most of the sharks will probably raising any playable hand in hopes of picking up chips. Also, you must be able to pick out the sharks at the table, because I know they will go into pots with the sole purpose of trying to steal it. So if you have a monster, give them a chance to steal it and play right back at them. I wish you luck in the tourney!
  • is it the one this Sunday? Teach and Literati will also be in there with you :) Best of luck.
  • Just under a year ago I managed a second place finish in a Stars $200 + 15.  I posted a number of hands from that tournament here: http://www.pokerforum.ca/forum/index.php?topic=597.15

I'm not sure whether or not going over those hands will help you in any way, ie: give you some indication of how people play in that tournament, as opposed to others.  The field has jumped from 1200 to 2200 or so in the last year, so that's a factor, as is the fact that there may have been a turnover of players.  Nonetheless, there is a slight chance that reading those HH's will help you in some bizarre way.  i hope they do, and best of luck.
  • Aww missed your post.  I was up north playing poker with my extended family!  I'm not a shark - for example would not have put up that money on my own - but played the tightest game perhaps of my life and eeked into the money.  Personal style has to be a factor to stay true to.  I've recently learned how people play back at you at the higher limits.  Hope you read some of the good pregametime advice.
  • nice, 370th for me. Decided not to try to fold into the money and got caught on a blind steal. Outflopped him but got rivered. Was completely card dead for the first 90 mins so I was pretty happy all things considered.
  • despite what everyone says i know it's a lot easier said then done. I primarily play $20, 30, and some 50 SNG's on Party, but have found when i jump up to say a $215 my game goes to shit because for me that's a decent chunk of coin when u go to school and make $10/hour grinding at the home depot. the key is to just not think about the stakes, and just play YOUR game. like i said though, easier said then done.
