tourney format

hello,
anyone know where i might find a basic write up of a tourney format? i'm running a small fundraising one @ work for the employees, and i just want people to know that the way it's being run is more or less the norm. any help would be appreciated.

  • Wow. I just read through the guide and I think it's a great start. There are a few minor differences to how I run games and how I know others run their games, but the meat is all there.

I would suggest only looking at the bare bones section (the need to know stuff). Most important is finding a blind structure that works and having someone there that can solve any problems with confidence. Get those arranged and the game will run smoothly.

    Good luck
  • thanks for the help guys. i've decided to run an aggressive blind structure, b/c we want to wrap the whole thing up in about 4 hrs incl. eating. with approx 40 people, i think we should be okay. we're gonna start w/ 2000 chips, 25/50bb. raising every 25 min, with 5 min breaks. 2nd level 50/100, 100/200 then up by 100, ie. 200/400, 300/600 etc.
    any thoughts?

  • raising every 25 min, with 5 min breaks.

These breaks strike me as too short and too frequent.

Something like 10 minute breaks every 1.5 or 2 hours seems like the right ballpark.

  • there are going to be a lot of people that are only there to donate to the fundraiser, not really poker players, per se, and the majority engage in the disgusting habit of smoking. also, to ease things, tables will be reset (even out players?) during those breaks. unless, like a bunch of people get knocked out at the same time. keep in mind, only playing for 1st and 2nd--digital camera and chip set. otherwise everything seem okay?

  • Yeah, that should be ok, although you will find that you need to condense more frequently than every 25 mins. You should read up on methods for condensing games - there are a few I know of. I usually try to keep my tables balances (meaning no more than 1 empty seat on any table)

Also, an aggressive blind structure would have you higher at level 5 than 300/600. Perhaps starting at 50/50 and moving up to 50/100, then double after that? it's a small difference, but I have found things like that to make a difference.
  • It has been my experience that tournaments of this nature end when the blinds total about 10% of the total chips in play. 40 players X 2000 chips= 80000 X 10% = 8000. My suggestion:
    25/50
    50/100
    100/200
    200/400
    400/800
    600/1200
    1k/2k
    2k/4k
    3k/6k

    20 minutes/level, 10 break every 3 levels. Should last 3 to 3 1/2 hours + eating time.

    Again, only a suggestion.

    Have fun.
