Building a poker table

I know there's been a zillion posts on it.  I've seen the debates on mdf vs plywood and the like.  But I haven't seen this.  I live in an apartment and don't want to varnish the wood inside( for obvious reasons, not to mention the g/f is pregnant).  I was thinking of using a maple melamine board for the racetrace portion of the table.  Has anyone done this and did it work out?  Also I would like to know experiences on the different matterials for both the railing and the interior.
Also cupholders? Where in Toronto can they be obtained I was want to do things locally rather than ship it here.

  • yes, having a full-cloth playing surface is nice. but having a "set-on" race track is a nice option so you can have either. and it does solve your no-staining problem. i hade a track of plexi cut to the size i needed and it works great. the only slight issue is the slide under cupholders can't go under the rail, but can go under the track if you wanted.
  • Just started building my table tonight.
I like the race track but man that's a lot of extra work.

homepokertourney.com is the best site to check out all the different designs. Huge selection.

  • To AcidJoe... how are you going to cut your melamine? Most melamine will chip unless you use a very fine tooth blade for cutting it, or a router bit... obviously you won't be using a table saw! If your using a jig saw make sure you cut the piece with the good side down!! The down side will have less tear out along the edge. You can buy some water based sealants that hardly smell... alright, they smell less. Good luck and post some pics when you get done!
  • I did forget about how easy melamine chips, thanx for reminding me.  But yes I'd be using a very fine tooth blade.  Maybe back to my original plan and do some of the prep work etc in my office (omg that means I'll have to clean up a spot to work).

Edit: Just game to me use masking tape where i'm cutting to reduce chipping.
  • Acid Joe...

I got my cupholders on ebay from a company called Maverick Poker Table Co.
I got 30 of them for about 70 bucks, shipping included. 3 Tables ready to go.
There were some US sites that had them a bit cheaper but the duty and shipping would cost a bundle.

  • Rent a bay in one of those 'your own garage' places.
  • I just got my cup holders today unfortunately 4.99 each at Bass pro shop in the vaughn mills mall. I think I'm gonna use velveteen for the centre insert. I'm gonna try the Melamine bit but if it doesn't work out well I guess I'll have no choice but to go with a quality oak piece of wood and polyurethane it.
  • OK it's done....... the melamine did work out ok..... one word of caution is it isn't 8 x 4 it's 8'1" X 4'1" I didn't use one piece of foam for the rail..... DO USE 1 piece. I bought an electric staple gun...... crap...... I had a air compressor at work and bought a Pneumatic staple gun.... for 10 bux more it's the bomb. I used 9 ml underpad for my centre insert. I will post pics shortly. All total I spent maybe 500 bux but I did buy a staple gun in that for 70 some wood to make jigs..... and more nails and fasters than i could use for one table. One corner of the vinyl where I started with the electric staple gun is wrinkled to hell the rest of it is great. And I do have one full sheet of plywood I didn't use..... who wants it?
