  • What's the structure? And payouts?

  • We play `1-2 for the entire rebuy period. Start with 80 chips. You can rebuy if you have 10 or less chips. After that the blinds are going up every 15 minutes. Depending on how many play we will have 3 or 4 prizes.

  • I’m sure I’m not the only one wondering, but how long is the rebuy period?
  • If we start right at 6:00 rebuy period ends at 8:00. Any can register till then. If we start late we may say 8 30. the average is about 2 rebuys per person but some are a little more and others are none.
  • Hey there!

Just some feedback, and I promise I'm not trying to be an ass here....

That tourney structure is a nice easy setup, but it is a bit of what would be considered "bingo" in terms of stack depth, "patience factor", and minimizes the skill component. I'm not saying that it doesn't make for a fun night of poker, it's just that with 80 chips, and blinds going up on a schedule similar to 1-2/2-4/3-6 kinda thing, it basically means rebuys are not worth it after the first hour or so.

Again, not meant to be trolling or anything, but if you did the math I'd bet this is similiar to the turbo tourney at Casino Niagara on Mondays, where very quickly everyone is at an all-in or fold kinda situation. Tournament structures are thorougly discussed, and you can take a peek at some of the other tournies posted here for guidance. Heck, feel free to DM me to talk about some (though I'm not the expert on the forum here). If it's a matter of limited chips and such, makes complete sense, and hey, have a great time. But, I think you might get a few more folks out if they feel the structure is a bit different.

  • You're misunderstanding Mark. The blinds stay at 1-2 for two hours during rebuy period. Still, only 80 chips at 1-2 is kind of bingo unless you can triple up quick.

    Ah.. I did misread.

But ya it still is pretty shallow.

Again, not trying to be an ass :)

  • I understand what you are saying but I do not think the structure in any way resembles Niagara on a Monday, lol.

If you are felted the last few hands before the rebuy period ends you rebuy at a discounted rate ($20) and when you do so you have 40 big blinds (with no antes). We allow you to rebuy any time you are 10 chips or below so you might have up to 45 big blinds. I played last week on Wednesday and even with double stack from Monday your were looking at maybe 8 or 9 big blinds. Monday would be far worse. You also had to put up the full buy in amount of $275,00. Lastly our add on is $40.00 for 200 chips once the rebuy period ends so when the blinds start to go up (we start at 5 /5 to get rid of whites) you are looking at 56 big blinds if you have to rebuy last hand (80 plus 200). The average number of rebuys per person is a pretty consistent 2.2 to 2.5 rebuys. So the average stack at the end of the rebuy period would be around 450 chips (80 entry, 2.3 rebuys 160 and the 200 add on). When the blinds start going up the average person has 95 big blinds and we do not have big blind antes ever.
  • Just to finish conversation (and that what it is not an argument) our blinds go 1-2 for two hours and then 15 minute blinds of

5-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-25, 20-40, 30-60 and finally at level 7 does our big blind equal the starting stack of 80 chips 40-80. We do not hit that until 3.5 hours into our tournament. We then go 50-100, 75-150, 100-200 and then double from there. I fail to see how that can be considered bingo. I've actuality had players ask if we could remove a few levels (remove 10-15 and 15-25 and add 10-20)

If that works for your group, that's great. However, it's generally accepted that players start with at least 100 BBs (often 200BBs). Otherwise, play basically requires players to push all in often due to stack sizes (and hence the bingo comparison because smaller stacks mean less skill and play).

Clearly, your hybrid tournament model is different than most, but starting with only 40 BBs seems to suggest that stacks should be pushing in a lot in the early going. The fact that you only average ~2 buy-ins per person it kind of strange honestly.

Please don't take offense. Run your game as you see fit with the players you have. I'm just explaining what Mark (and probably others on here) might think.
  • To me is sort of a hybrid in that we encourage rebuys but once we end the rebuy period the average stack is almost 100 big blinds which I think turns it into a deep stack. I played in a tournament last weekend where the starting stack was 25,000 chips and the blinds were 100-100. So you have 250 big blinds, 12 minutes later it was 100-200-200 big blind ante. then 200-300-300, 300-500-500. To make it easy lets say 1 round per blind level. so in one hour your blinds are over 10% of your starting stack. the next level was 400-800-800 so now just over 1 hour into the tournament you are now at 2,000 per round. There is a re-entry at full cost but no add-on. In this tournament you will need to win 18,700 chips plus your starting stack of 25,000 just to cover the blinds in the first two hours. In my format the same 100 hands (one orbit per 12 minute blind level) you will still have 50 chips left at the end of the rebuy period and you get to do a add on at that point. That is why we average only 2.5 rebuys, The blinds do not pressure you to play.

I heard an expression once. The guy who invented tournaments was smart but the guy who inventing ever increasing blinds was a genius.

Why not come to our game tomorrow night and see what its all about. We have two seats still open. If after playing you still think its Bingo I will personally refund your $50.00 entry fee. If you enjoy the game I would ask that you post a positive response on this thread.

I understand you may be busy but it is a fair offer.

    Hey!

Appreciate the offer but I'm already playing tomorrow... And being in kitchener, I rarely make it to Hamilton (legit attended my first game of trigs' this year). I will keep an eye out as I do try to support games. And fair play keep an eye out for both of our games, I really got to get around to hosting another one.

I'll take a seat. I've been planning on coming out. Want to support the Hamilton games for sure. I'm not accepting a refund though. Please PM me the address.
