you opponent throws his cards in the muck before you show...

I think it has been addressed in the past, but I can't find it. Sry!

Let say you are in a pot with someone, he bets into you on the river, you call. He quickly throws his cards in muck.

Do you win the pot automatically? Do you have to show your cards to take it?

Thx

  • I had the same thing happen to me at the Port Perry tournament last month. :D I waited for the dealer to pass me the chips then I mucked my cards. I guess the other player could ask to see your cards or another player at the table that is concerned about cullusion between the two of you.
If no one asks to see them you can muck.
  • Where I play, you get the pot without showing (unless somebody asks to see). But it's not very common - what's more common is the bettor will say something like "I missed my draw, if you've got a pair you take it", the caller shows a hand at least that good, and the bettor mucks without showing. I once saw this abused by a bettor to get somebody to show a losing hand early, but both the dealer and the floor manager warned him about it and it didn't happen again.
