A realization

I was playing in a SNG last night and i just realized a huge change in my NL game. At the later stages of the tournaments i no longer worry about showing down the best hand. Within some reason I will simply apply pressure, that's if i'm a large stack, medium stack or even a short stack.

I will almost never play back against raises, even laying down queens etc..., instead i'm perfectly happy pilfering other people's stacks.

I won the only SNG i played yesterday, twice i ended up getting most of my money involved as a dog, and both times i came back from behind, but i still felt entitled to winning both hands because i had committed my money to the pot, someone else had to call.

Once was a steal from the cutoff with J8o, the short stack on the button goes all-in for the size of my raise basicly. He has TT, i spike a J on the flop and win. Funny thing is i think i was more right in stealing with J8o than he may have been in calling.

Another time i raised in MP with TT, short stack goes all-in for basicly my total bet. I call he has JJ and i sucked out with a Ten on the flop. Again here is the question, was i more right being agressive with my hand, and was he less right in 'calling' in this situation.

Basicly i realized that later in NL tournaments the worst thing you can do is 'Call', now early with low blinds i'll call and limp with lots of hands but, later i'm happy to simply committ myself and let other people make the tough decisions.

  • Correct, but for the wrong reasons. In all poker, players who take the initiative are rewarded more often -- this is more true (omg animal farm?) in NL. And, it becomes much more important as you progress through a tournament.

But, in the hands you cite, you got lucky, very lucky -- you were not rewared for being aggressive -- you just caught some cards. No need for unwarranted aggression. I find selective aggression works the best. As soon as I don't get very picky, then I take it prison style.
