There were some previous gmail threads but now I have to say, (or as Playa would say) if you don't have a gmail account, why are you alive? By the time you're awake you'll have plenty of space. Check this out!

2. How do I sign up? When can I get a Gmail account?

We're currently only offering Gmail as part of a preview release and limited test. We don't have details on when Gmail will be made more widely available, as that depends in part on the results of the test.

Yep it's close / near public since people have so many invites nows. I have 50. Others likely do as well.
