WSOP 2005, here I come!

The flight and hotel are booked. Too bad it's not for the main event.

That's right, once again I have decided to spend smaller amounts on more tournaments, instead of a whole bunch on one. Why? Because.

However, I am playing in one more than I did last year, providing I don't make any 'day two's'.

June 3: $1500 NLHE
June 4: $1500 PLHE
June 5: $1500 LHE

Dave Scharf will be playing in these events as well, as will one or both of the remaining Team Canuck Poker members (Ralph and Bob). As for the Main Event, I am going to play sat's while I'm in Vegas. If I win my way in, I'll fly back a month later. Or, if I win a lot of money in one of the three preliminary WSOP events I'm playing in, I'll fly back a month later.

Dave is playing in the big one for sure, as is at least one other TCP member. I am totally jealous, but I can't justify spending 10K on one tournament. Yet. Well maybe I could, but I can't.

Gooooooooooooo TCP!

As an aside, I am pretty damn excited, now that it's all booked. It will be nice to be in Vegas with people I know. And it was pretty cheap too... I'm staying at The Orleans, 5 nights, $436 USD. And the flight, round-trip, $500 CAD.

  • Or you can make a killing winning two tournaments, signing a sponsorship deal and spend the rest of the month playing poker in vegas ... you know to kill time till the main event ;)
  • Chugs, I gotta say, I like the way you think. :)

My real challenge to myself is to see if I can write EVEN LONGER trip reports.
  • You should buy a blackberry and do a live running trip report ... heck i would buy you a blackberry just to read those.

one second guys, i need to post online how i just bluffed that loser on the other end of the table.
  • WOW, very nice! GL on your embark!

I'm considering depending on how my skills come along to either play the $1500 or $1000 NL HE event. And give a tonne of shots at the WSOP through PS. Building up the W$ roll until then. Maybe I'll have enough to directly buyin :P
  • Good choice on those 3 events I would prefer to play those 3 than the main event alone.

If you still want to play the main event you could always go the Pink Bunny route

  • As Negreanu would say "Represent!" (Well, he said that a few times at the bar.)

    Good luck guys.
  • Now I'm feeling really guilty that I still got your Elvis shades.
  • excellent news! With any luck a few more CPF members will be along side you as well.
  • Yeah, I was just reading about the 'send a forum member to a 1.5K WSOP event' tournament. I guess we'll have to come up with a catchier name.

Maybe I can win my way into Event #1, care of pokerforum!
  • I'm going to be in Vegas at about the same time for the bloggers tournament. Probably won't put up the money for any WSOP events, but may play a few satellites.
  • Would love to join you all down there in July. But if none of the rest of us here make it, we know you guys will do well. You're Canucks.
  • All Aces,

I may be going down to play the 1.5k PLO event...haven't been playing live much lately, have you been around?

Dr.D :wav: :wav: :wav: :wav: :wav: :wav: :fish:
  • I think I clicked that icon too many times :wav: :wav: :wav: :wav: :rage:
  • Devin,

i see you are in for 4500. are u selling action? I want i want i want.

so u know standard deals now incorporate hotel/airfare.

    let me know.
  • Mr All_Aces,it was a pleasure meeting you the one time we played together.I wish nothing but endless rushes when you get to vegas on your journey to become a canadian poker legend.
May team beaver represent our boys well and the best of luck to all forum members who get down there to play.

    Cheers Yayiwin.

AA which airline are you booked with?

for anyone going down in June or July, how far in advance should one make reservations ?

i guess flying down there and then attempting to look for a room is NOT recommended ???
  • best of luck devin, hopefully u win a whack of cash. and confusedONE, i would definately not suggest just flying down and hoping for a room. i was in vegas this past week and there was nothing special going on yet, all the major hotels were booked. for decent deals on rooms check out lasvegas.com (although i learned later that it was actually cheaper to book directly through the hotel's website where i stayed [excalibur]). also rooms can be as much as 3,4,or 5 times the price on a friday/saturday night=think about it.

    and again best of luck,skill,etc.,etc.

wow 3x to 5x on weekends
i'm guessing it's cheaper downtown  than the strip ?
    thx :)
  • I can't wait for the reports - yours are among the best.
    All the best!
  • With the new development of Pokerstars accepting W$ to buy into some of the preliminary events, I think it would be advantageous to you to buy in through PS. You would be saving at least 10-15% of the buy in by buyin W$ off of the internet. Propbably save enough to reduce the would be hotel/accomdation to zero.

    I know I'm building a W$ roll to buy into the $1500 in 2006.
  • I hope someday I can play with the pros in a tourney....how do you know if your game is ready to be competitive???
  • Whether you win or seat or not to the main event I would still go down there just because the side action is going to be insane. I bet if you play a 1k NL game you could make the 10k in a few days.

You'll probably know yourself. Play a lot of online tourneys and once you can cash quite frequently and get deeep in the tourneys.
  • In my experience, you will NOT be ready the first time.

The WSOP has humbled me everytime I have played. In 1998 I was a brash "know it all" and I even made a final table. In the post game, however, it was apparent to me that I was WAY behind the rest of the players at the final table. Well, most of them anyway.

In 2001 I was better, but when we got to forty players I felt like I was sitting in my underpants.

In 2004 I was OK. But, I was only prepared for "the field" and for the "uber-aggressive pro." I was not prepared to deal with Negreanu, Harrington, Cloutier, Chan, and a whole "other" class of World Class Pros.

This year, I feel ready, but I EXPECT to be, once again, humbled.
  • I think this years WSOP will be totally different from previous years. Triple the entrants from last year’s field, new venue and lots of savvy and lots of not so savvy internet players. I don’t think anyone can be fully prepared for that until playing in it first hand.
  • harrah's has stated that they will make 6600 seats available this year and fully expects to sell them all out. over half of the seats are already bought up, mostly by internet sites and the like. for those of you not so mathematically inclined thats a total prize pool of over $66 million! yikes!
  • Payout for 6600 players - House keeps 6%

  • Never before have I looked at a payout structure, seen a difference of 'only' 500K between third and fourth place, and thought to myself: 'it's actually a pretty flat structure'.

That being said, it kind of is, especially at the final table.  From tenth to second, there is about the same difference as we go from place to place: 500K, give or take.  Interesting stuff, Dave, thanks.
  • Good luck to the TCP players, as well as any other forum participants making the trek. I am sure it will be the experience of a lifetime, especially this year being the largest WSOP ever.

Side question- I believe the tables are 10 seats right? If that's the case, why does 10th get the same amount as 11th and 12th? Not that I would argue if I finished 10th, just curious why they would have no higher reward to making the final table.
  • Good luck to Team Canuck. I'm actually heading down to Vegas tonight so maybe I'll get the chance to wish you guys luck in person tomorrow. Never managed to win a satellite into one of the events, so I will be doing the usual Vegas thing.
