Have a question about kicker

Hello Folks,

Played Texas Holdem yesterday. Had the combination on the table:

2 4 7 8 J

My cards: 7 10
My buddy's cards: 6 7

There was no flush on the table. Who won? I said me, cuz I have 10 as a kicker. He said, we have to split it, cuz we had Jack on river and we both had the same highest combination.
Couldn't find the answer with Google.

    Best 5 card hand, you throw out the 2,4 on the board and what's left with your own cards is each of your hands, so yes your kicker plays and you won. If the 2 or 4 was a card higher than your 10 then it would have been chopped.
