how to play [ ] on the button?

NL MTT blinds are 1000/2000
9 players at table...fairly tight
avg 30000
you 20000

you get T:spade: T:club: on the button
SB & BB post and UTG+1 raises it to 6000
and is folded to you

9000 in the pot
you have 20000

do you call? re raise? go all in? fold?

and same question but this time with: Q:diamond: J:diamond:

thanks :)

  • The way I see it with the TT on the Button you have one of 2 choices

You either push all in or fold. I personally would never just call since if any card over a 10 hit you have to fold. to the UTG+1's bet.

I would push right in at this point.

With QJ I would fold period too many hands a tight player will raise with that make you less than even money with a QJ suited.
  • Obviously, it depends on your read/experience on/with the original raiser, where you are in the tourny, payouts, your goal in the tourny (getting first, making the money?), etc...

    So...it depends...
  • with the 10,10...the determining factor of what to do, would be the time until the next blind increase and players to the money. If i was fairly close to the money, I would fold...same goes for the q,j... the pot was also raised making the tens look alot smaller especially from early position. Since you said it is quite a tight table, then I would imagine that this person is raising with pocket J's, Q's or AK or AQ suited.. I would most likely stay away from this hand...unless I was falling behind and there was still quite a climb to the cash
  • I probably fold. Either T-T or Q-Js.

My second choice is probably to call. I will give UTG credit (with no other knowledge) for a bir/medium pair or a big ace. Moving in on his will almost certainly get called pre-flop. So, call. If there is an ace on the flop and he's got the balls to move on my with 8-8 then good for him. If there is no A-K-Q on the flop I am moving in.

The question I always ask myself is: "Can I add fold equity to the hand?" If I can, I will generally default to that route.

I don't like moving in. YOu are getting called. And, you have to hope he has 9-9 or lower to feel good about your bet.

My answer might change if I know how deep UTG was?

    Dave.

    1 question here.

If your second choice is just to call at this point, it would only leave you with 10k after the flop (Blinds are 1000/2000). That is less than 5x the Big Bet if you are forced to lay this hand down.

Would it not just make more sense to move in at this point. After all if you are willing to risk 1/2 your stack and leave yourself crippled chip wise with the BB coming to you on the next hand. Edit this is wrong and I realize it... The BB is still a fair distance away from this player.

Just curious why this isn't the better play (if you where going to play this hand) given the blinds and the chip count at this point.
  • Doh, oops. I just realized I made a mistake in the Above question...

I realize that the Blinds are still 7 spots away from the Button in this case.

However I still have basically the same question. Are you going to see a better hand in 7 hands that you can play if you just call here and leave yourself crippled with only 5x the Big Blind in chips.
  • TT, I call. If no scary cards, I move in or call his all in.

QJs, I fold. Using the gap concept you are definately behind, if no dominated.
  • It is very late but don't you (or I) have 14k left after the call? I was using that as one factor to call with the 10 10. I also like to call with this and see the flop.

I don't like the QJs so much. I have to figure UTG +1 has 24k left. Perhaps if I knew what the blinds would do I might call but it feels loose. SB is probably not going to call so I fold them.
