new forum toys coming soon.
Ok, so here are some changes that are either 100% going to be made this week, but some..well, perhaps they won't work so well (like the arcade and personal journals)
1. People who register must post at least 10 posts before they have the abilty of posting a link to a website or even create their own thread. This should dramatically cut down on the spam.. New members will have to make at least 10 relevant REPLIES to existing posts prior to creating their own. (chance of this coming..100%)
2. The abilty to download threads. Pretty handy, if a thread contains useful info and you want it available offline in a .txt file, now you can. (this is also 100%)
3. An arcade with the infamous "Yeti Sports". Just an added bit of fun. (chance of being added, right now, about 45%)
4. Ability to create your own personal guestbook/journal/diary on the fly.
consider it a page about you where you can post your bio, your interests, trip reports etc, it would be your own page kind of like www.pokerforum.ca/membername. Kind of hard to describe, but very neat...and a cool way to learn about eachother now that community has grown so much. It will be easier to describe once it's available (about 40% chance at the moment)
I'm always open for more ideas on how we might bring the community together.

Simply awesome.
Finally banning a spammer has some non-trivial consequences.
In terms of Mod-Ops*, I'd say that the bulk has been deleting or moving posts that this new feature will prevent (at least to some degree) from ever showing up.
I guess what will end up happening is that some spammers wil just have to end up hijacking existing threads, but that's still something I can watch out for easily enough. But at least this way, putting threads in the wrong place will be cut down quite a bit.
From the opposite point of view, do you (or anyone) think this will be too much of a barrier to new (non-spamming) forum members? I don't, but it also might be wise to make it clear somewhere that this rule is in effect, or else it might create a lot of "why can't I post a new thread" frustrations for new users.

*The 4th game planned in the Splinter Cell series I believe.
I think a message making people aware of this and pointing them to the "search" function will more than help any ligitimate new users. Many topics have already been covered and a new user can ressurect an old thread if their question was not completely addressed.

P.S. I'm just glad I got my posts up to 16 before these police state regulations came into effect. LOL
I agree with this. The forum is currently growing at a very fast pace. I think we are 1,099 while only a couple of weeks ago we were counting down the 1,000 member.
I do think the additions will be nice...but I don't want to scare away future posters.
Watch that sass. Posts can be deleted.
THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE POSTED.

P.S. I'm totally joking. Have some of this:

Hrmmm.... let me think..
I did make the decision to make things easier on the mods....HRrrrmmmMMmmm...
Or am I asking just tooooo much?
Yeah, I know what you mean. And thanks for looking out for us. The 10 post rule (or something similar) definitely would make it easier in terms of helping cut down on the one-shot spammers.
I've had a lot of ideas about this sort of thing, but none which I think are much better than the 10 posts rule. I'll toss them out there in case it will spark some further ideas.
-Some kind of email authentication stage of registration. That is, you must have a legit email address to post. I'm not sure if this even accomplishes anything, but it's one extra step for one-shot spammers. In fact, simply requiring registrarion period before you could post was a big improvement. That darn Anonymous was such a spammer!
-IP blocking/banning. Actually a horrible idea I think, since IP addresses are usually dynamic. I bring it up because I'm wondering if there is anything along similar lines? The trouble with banning a spammer with the current system is that they may simply register again. I've already had more than one register-ban-repeat war.
-Time delay on registration activation and/or functionality. It might be a barrier to a one-shot spammer to simply delay the ability for a new member to post for a fixed amount of time (24 hrs? a week?). The idea is that a one-shot spammer might either forget to come back (yay!), or not be bothered (yay!). Same "could be annoying to new members" idea as the 10 post dealie.
Any other ideas, or comments on these ones?

*cough* read.

All good things there Scotty, I think some of them may infact already be admin "powers" I'll have to check, and if there, give those jedi powers to the mighty, mighty mods.
-Avatars (as Redington is refering to)
Fixed yet? If not, any ideas on how to get these working again?
EDIT: Forget I mentioned it, lest I be coughed towards. Ya didn't see nuthin.
-Hand converter
Not sure if you saw it, but you might want to look at this
http://pokerforum.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=3329
Basically magithighs is looking for an easy way to post hand histories more cleanly. Would it be possible to intergrate something like this into this forum? Going to a 3rd party hand converter is kind of clunky (and difficult for the casual user), and there are probably a lot of compatibility problems.
ScottyZ
But what about a posting about legit games and details? If someone was to join, and annouce a game somewhere, he would have to respond to 10 other threads before he could start his own about their game. Just an inconvenience I'm sure, but it could prevent someone from joining altogether.
Sorry. Try this one.

Truer words of never been spoken. It's in da' works.
I've always thought that using Holdem starting hands would be neat (but probably confusing for beginners, so this is not really a real suggestion).
Something like:
0-9: 72o
10-29: 72s
.
.
.
1000+: QQ
Mod: KK
Admin: AA

*And has posted at least once in PokerForum Version 2
Pfft.. Who wants to be a pair of queens?
Hmmm... AKs instead?
Might even be better to use Pai Gow instead of Holdem, since there is a wider variety of hands. A moderate user could be something like AA853 over 44, and the Admin could be the nut AKQJTs over AA.

If you do it by MAC address, it will always block the same PC, unless he/she changes their network card. I'm not sure how much power the ISP has given you guys as admins though.
I also like the idea of using hole cards for forum status, although it will drop me down to a low pocket pair, or about 7,8s...
Scotty, I've also thought block by IP was a poor idea.

I'm open to suggestions...how would it be implemented?
In regards to referrals: First of all you would need to figure out the relative monitary value of each new member on average. Secondly, it would be important to advertise the fact that referrals are encouraged and rewarded. I knew I had referred a TONNE of people but wasn't sure that it was actually counted until a few months ago when I checked my User Profile. Thirdly, recognize your members by having a "member of the month" and reward them with a free entry into that months member tournament. This members name would be posted on the homepage with who they registered.
This kinda thing above would be nice to see for "post of the month", "thread of the month". Of course we might want to call it something better then that...perhaps "post of the month" could be "the nuts" and "thread OFM" could be "Top set" or something. These members would once again be recognized on the forum home page and rewarded with a variety of things that could include: free member tournaments entry chip, free pokerforum.ca wear, discounts on pokersupplies.ca items, mod for a day powers Anyway, you get the picture.
One other thing that I had mentioned awhile back was to have a pokergods karma rating to assist in keeping the negativity at a lower level. You could screen who you wanted to see threads and posts from and if a member had a karma rating under 20 (or under a pair of 6's) you could choose to not see what they had written.
Oh, one other thing that you may or may not like. I'd be kinda cool if we could have provincial representation....Ontario members with a small Ontario flag beside there name rather then "Ontario"...etc.
Thanks for listening....ummm reading Neil.

User titles are coming, it's a done deal. Custom titles for folks w/ over 500 or so posts.
