Worst plays of my life at the final table....

30 person Freezeout tourney last night.
There are 4 of us left. Top 5 get paid.
I am in 2nd or 3rd at this point.
Blinds are 1,000 - 2,000 and I have around 25,000.
Im in the BB...one limper and SB calls....I have k-10o and check to see a flop
Flop comes 69K all hearts. I have no hearts. SB checks, I bet 4,000 and
get one caller, SB folds. Turn is a X(?) but Not a heart...I bet another 4,000
he thinks and thinks for ever and reluctantly calls....river is a heart and I move
all in wanting him to think I have had a flush the whole time and was betting small
just to milk him and by moving in he KNOWS I have the A  and would fold...
which was a great idea except for the fact he had the A  and sent me home.

Give me your feedback.

I know I should have:

a. Raised before the flop.
b. Bet more after the turn (like 8,000 or more)
c. Not gone all in on the river

God, this was so stupid. You all can hope to run into me at your final table where I seem to love to make my "mistake of the tournament"...

    what was he holding?
need more info like what was the turn and river
how much he had etc etc
  • c. Not gone all in on the river

I think that is the big one. Checking K10o to see a flop imo is OK. The bet on the flop could yes have been more aggressive but still it was a good move. Turn bet, fine. When the 4th heart came on the river tho, I'd have personally dumped it to a raise.

Only one other person but a check-fold, bet-fold to a raise would have been safer.

Live and learn, my history is full of mistakes that cost me a tourney, or money. From the payouts tho, you should have covered your buy-in, so no monetary damage done.

    same here LOL :D

me thinking AT (MP) is good when i get outkicked by AQ (SB) and tourney life is over :frown: ( had about same stack size )

1 mistake and it's all over  ( me overvaluing my hand late in tourney...close to final table )
  • i would have raised PF so (a) :spade:

i don't like checking here
  • He had A  and then some low :spade: like 7 or lower...don't remember
He also had a very slight chip lead on me at the time...just enough to bust me.
Turn was a lowish :spade: from what I remember....

and make it 8000 to 10000 on the flop

or possibly pushed it all in

    yes...very agris-sive :D

***Still lots of play in your stack.
Im in the BB...one limper and SB calls....I have k-10o and check to see a flop
Flop comes 69K all hearts. I have no hearts.
***I used to bet at flops like this, but now I tend to check and and fold or check and call a small bet. There are just too many bad things that can happen. In fact, if I am willing to bet at this flop it will not be because I have top pair, it will be because I think that I have a good bluffing opportunity. In other words, I am just as likely to bet out here with J-7 of clubs as I am a weak king. Although, this would not be the case if I were short stacked.
SB checks, I bet 4,000 and
    get one caller, SB folds.
***Despite my previous comment, I don't hate this play. A small poke and a small pot late in the tournament when it seems unlikely that anyone will mix it up with nothing. Take a shot, fair enough.
    Turn is a X(?) but Not a heart...I bet another 4,000
he thinks and thinks for ever and reluctantly calls....
***OK. THis play I don't like. He has called 4,000 once you have to believe that he will call again. So, either you are beat and wasting 4,000 or you are giving him a worthwhile draw for a heart. In other words, offer him bad odds or don't. But, don't drive in the middle.
river is a heart and I move
all in wanting him to think I have had a flush the whole time and was betting small
just to milk him and by moving in he KNOWS I have the A  and would fold...
which was a great idea except for the fact he had the A  and sent me home.
***Um, yes. Not so good. Likely you have the best hand already or he has his his draw. In either case you are happy to check. The only hands he might have that you might blow out are AK, KQ, or KJ with no heart but it's a big risk to through all your chips in HOPING he has one of those three hands.
    a. Raised before the flop.
***You could have, but it's not that big a deal. There is no shame in checking and seeing what the flop brings. Miss and fold and you only lose your BB. No big deal.
    b. Bet more after the turn (like 8,000 or more)
***Yes. If you are going to bet then make it have teeth.
    c. Not gone all in on the river
***Yes. A cutoff bet wouldn't have been the end of the world. Bet 4000 and fold if he raises you. I prefer to check, though, because he will check a lot of hands behind you.
  • I have one comment...:

The only time he'll call any kind of bet on that river is when he has your beat!!!! Why risk your tourny on a bluff when out of the money?
  • Yeah, like my post says...it was the worst plays of my life.
I have been playing just under 10 months now...so I have a ton to learn. But I find I seem to not think too good when I get to the final table...maybe I am too nervous about the money?
It was just like at the casino a few months ago...there was a freezeout with 100 people and I made the final table...I made some stupid move without thinking and end up in 5th place....yes, in that case AND in the tourney last night, I made money - BUT I should have made MORE money and that is what is killing me....you know if I have a good hand and someone gets lucky, well hey, good for them, that is poker - but when I screw up - I just can't let it go....

Anyways, thanks all for your responses I have learned my lesson well - I think it was like a $100-$300 lesson since that is about how much more I would have made if I placed 3rd or higher...

    Cheers guys.
