Can you fold KK preflop in a cash game?

In a $0.25/$0.50 NL Hold'em game last weekend, I was up to over $200 in the 9 player game when I was delt KK in middle position. The player under the gun raised to $7 and then I put him all in for the extra $40 that he had. Another player behind me, who was playing fairly conservatively all night, went all in for $145 instantly. It got back to the original $7 raiser and after some hesitaiton he called for his extra $40. Then the play was back on me. After some thinking I called the extra $105. I just couldn't lay down KK. The guy who raised the $145 had AA and I ended up losing the hand.

What do you guys think about this play? After the fact I actually think I should have layed it down based on the fact that I know the player who went all in for the $145 and he isn't know to be someone who would make a crazy play like that unless they have something really good. He is quite conservative.

  • lay it down
  • allin preflop with that kind of stack is mighty suspicious
  • people that play conservative and speed bet like that usually have you dead. beware the speed bet and utilize the speed bet.

You already have the answer you are looking for. We have to learn to listen to our inner voice.

Would this hand be on your mind if the board turned up a K?

Im getting the same 'read'. From your description of the events I think you had a hunch that the rockets were sitting in that persons hand.

I would probably very rarely/never fold Kings in a limit game pre-flop.

In NL, it would be very hard but the situation you speak of, I just might.
  • Unless you know the player extrememly well (what he will do with AA in this situation as opposed to AK KK QQ) I would never muck KK.........its just to tough to put your opponent on the only hand that beats you.
    Wader
  • I'm guessing this was the game at REV? Haven't played it in a long time so I might not know the player in question, but in general I agree with Wader. Even some very tight players, especially newer ones that just learned that tight play wins, can badly overvalue a hand like AKs or QQ in a situation like this. I think it's possible to fold though, you need to ask yourself how certain you are in your read. If you "know" he has it then go ahead and fold, but if you're not sure you have to call. In the long run he will make the same call against you and you will break even in AA vs KK situations.

  • I think i MIGHT toss it in this situation. I usually only play 5/10NL and if I was in your situation with say $3000 and this happened to me... I think i would lay it. However, at $0.25/$0.50 I'd probably play it knowing i am probably going in with the worst of it which is simply a bad play.

That being said I have never folded KK pre flop but i can think of a bunch of situations that if they did come up i would probably fold it, and some situations where I would 100% fold it.

I guess my point is folding KK pre flop isn't the end of the world, if you have a strong hunch someone has AA why not save your money and wait for a better time to get your money in. So my answer is, yes it's possible to fold kings pre flop, there! :)
  • I dont know how many times I have been burnt with KK AA....they are killers for laying down...its like they are glued to your eyes (when playing online) and your other hand is glued to the mouse checking calling raising lol..........it hurts alot to lose when your holding bullets.. You know what happened to me once? I played an AA and some guy raised all in...he was playing crap all night....he won with J3h.............aaaaaackkkkkkkkk!!!!
  • Here's the answer you want: NO
(Note: UNLESS you're 99% sure he has As)
  • "another player behind me, who was playing fairly conservatively all night, went all in for $145 instantly"

    so fold then...

P.S. how did the flop come down ?
