Swim to Johnny H

Hot on the heals of the fat boy challenge, I have a new challenge. A good friend who is a double amputee has challenged me to swim the Northumberland Straight with him next August. I swam competitively as a teen but really haven't trained hard in many years. He has swam Lake Ontario and has set me up with a training regimen.

I do have until December of this year to finalize my commitment. I swim in the pool almost daily but this would now mean structured sets and really working on my technique again. My front crawl has always been just ok and when I swam competitively it was the breast stroke that I swam.

Thoughts on this anyone?

  • Is swimming the Northumberland Straight a thing people do? Water temp, currents, tidal effects?
  • It is the warmest part of the Atlantic north of Virginia. Jellyfish are a problem.

    75F in the summertime.

Yes, more than a few people cross it every year.

I think it's a cool idea, Joe. Good to have a goal in front of you to keep you motivated.

I'll be waiting on the shore with a coffee and a beer for you!
