Rare Answers Contest #2

I did this quite a number of years ago, and I think people enjoyed it, so I present to you the Second Canadian Poker Forum Rare Answer Contest.

The rules are simple... I ask 10 questions... you supply 10 answers.

The scoring... assuming you give a correct answer... your score for that question will be equal to the number of people that submit that answer. For example... if the question was... Name a planet in our solar system... and you answered Mars... and 3 other people answered Mars... then your score would be 4. If your answer was unique, then your score would be 1. In the event you answer a question incorrectly, by submitting an answer like Pluto... then your score for that question will be equal to the highest score for that question x2. In the above example. ... if Mars was the most common answer submitted (scoring 4)... your score would be 8.

Your final score is the product of your 10 question scores.

Lowest Final Score Wins.

Judges decisions are final.

SUBMIT YOUR ANSWERS VIA PM.

Do NOT post answers to questions in this thread...

Deadline for submissions is Friday, July 10th, 2015 @ 23:00 EDT

He was the original pro that was on this site. He played mostly limit hold em and even wrote a book which I think I have somewhere.
  • Yes he is a great guy. Many long years ago, I played a fun sng with him, all aces, ram eh and I forget who else. Back when people actually played poker here. I'll bet Rob remembers.

    0. Name a Beatle (musical group)

    1. Ringo Star
    1. Norman Chapman
    1. Stuart Sutcliffe
    1. John Lennon
    2. Pete Best
    2. George Harrison

Norman Chapman was an interesting choice... I nearly scored it incorrect. Clearly he played drums for the band under the name The Silver Beatles. He played during the summer of 1960, and the band's name changed to The Beatles in August... without actual dates I couldn't bring myself to disqualify this answer. I scoured many websites to try and nail down more specific dates but to no avail.

    1. Name an automobile manufacturer with a production of greater than 100,000 units per year (as of 2014)

This question was too easy... all answers were unique!... and most were very obscure!

    2. Name a Canadian city with a population greater than 500,000 (2011 census)

    1. Montreal
    1. Ottawa
    2. Brampton
    3. Quebec City
    Incorrect = 6. Richmond Hill

With 11 cities to choose from... I'm stumped as to why 3 of you ended up with Quebec City... psychology at work obviously!

    3. Name a National Hockey League team from the 1970-1971 season

    1. Minnesota North Stars
    3. St. Louis Blues
    3. California Golden Seals
    Incorrect = 6. Oakland

Struggled with Oakland here... Oakland changed their name before the season started so I feel justified in my decision! It made no difference for the eventual winner but knocked kwsteve out of a 3 way tie for 2nd. And interestingly Minnesota was the last entry, so until that point, everyone had submitted only 2 teams!

    4. Name a WSOP Main Event Winner with 3 or more WSOP Bracelets

    1. Unger
    1. Keller
    1. Dastmulchi
    2. Hellmuth
    3. Johnston

So many names on this list... not sure how 3 people end up with Barry Johnston.

    5. Name a former Prime Minister of Canada

    1. Everybody else
    2. Arthur Meighen

    Meighen was the only duplicate!

    6. Submit a positive integer less than 10

    1. 3
    1. 7
    1. 8
    2. 2
    2. 9
    Incorrect = 4. 1.87

    Huh??

    7. Name a current Corporation on the Dow Jones

    1. Lots of choices
    2. Travelers
Incorrect = 4. Royal Bank of Canada

Um... 2 in a row that confused me!

    8. Name a actress with 2 or more academy awards

    1. Shelley Winters
    1. Olivia de Havilland
    1. Ingrid Bergman
    1. Helen Hayes
    2. Meryl Streep
    2. Luise Rainer

Seemed straight forward and too easy!

    9. Name a planet

    1. Mercury
    1. Kepler 49e
    1. Alpha Centauri Bb
    1. Wasp 12
    2. Neptune
    2. Earth

3 people picked up on the trick to almost guarantee uniqueness!!

Feel free to discuss now.... I'll do another if there's interest...
  • Damn . . . forgot about Chapman. Though not "technically" a Beatle, I am not sure they released an album as the Silver Beatles, so I would not quibble either way.
  • Thanks for running this, question though. Maybe I'm missing something but how did you arrive at the total scores, eg shouldn't Reef's score be 17? (the total of all his scores for the 10 questions)

    Scores are multiplied together.
  • Doh I think I was looking for cities with pop > 100,000
