Mike Watson nets $700,000 with latest tournament win
St. John’s poker pro Mike Watson scored another big payday on the professional circuit Friday, winning the main event at the 2016 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas.
For his efforts, Watson collected a cool $728,325 U.S.
It’s not the first big win for the 31-year-old Watson, who now calls Toronto home. Last spring, he collected $752,518 at the EPT Grand Final Monte Carlo.
Friday’s win puts Watson’s career earnings in the range of $9 million.
Watson, who graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in math, started his poker career online as “SirWatts,” but has been a regular on the live poker scene for more than a decade. He’s currently fifth on Canada’s all-time money list.
Daniel Negreanu tops that list with over $30 million in winnings.
While some choose to grind out 40 hours a week in local casinos, playing low-stakes events, and others make a living from online poker, Watson has evolved into a travelling tournament player, on the road for up to five months of the year.
“What I do,” he said in a Telegram story published last May, “is a little more aggressive with the travelling and playing in some of the high-stakes tournaments, trying to make a little bit more money at it than just a comfortable living.”
He still plays online from the comfort of his King Street West condo in downtown Toronto — there’s money to be made if you’re willing to put the time in, he says — but limits it to two days a week, one of which is Sunday, “the big day for online tournaments.
“The big money is really the live tournaments. That’s where you’ve got the chance to have the huge scores,” said Watson.
