  • This was my first time out to Bfillmaff's place which I discovered is literally like 5 minutes from my house. The $60 rebuy tournament didn't have a single rebuy which everyone said was a first. Structure was pretty decent. It was set up to run for about 4 hours so obviously there were some biggish blind jumps but that was to be expected.

The space and tables were decent as well. It was the first time I had played on speed cloth as opposed to felt. I have to say that I think I personally prefer felt tables now. Yes the cards slide so much easier on the speed cloth but I prefer how the felt has a little give to it as it makes picking up the cards easier. Obviously not a big deal though.

I was able to chip up early with a few people on my table playing probably a little too loose passive. I won a couple decent pots without showdown. I did lose a decent sized pot early on though after calling in the BB with Q8o and calling a flop bet with AQx showing. Turn checks though and Q river. I check again thinking that my opponent is raising this river with a lot of his range and I've played it pretty passively so far. He does elect to raise and I just call. He shows Q9o and his 9 plays.

I scored the first knockout of the tournament against a newbie who was just learning the game. He called preflop and I raised it up with AKo. He called to see a QQx flop. After thinking for a second he pushed all in. I had a little read on him and went with it. He flipped over something like 9h5h. Turn and river bricked for him and I have a decent stack now.

Cut to my downfall. It started with a big hand against djgolfcan. I believe I was UTG with QQ and raised it up. DJ was button I think and he 3bet me leaving himself not that much behind. After getting a quick count of his remaining stack I push all in only to get broken wrist Hellmuth insta-called by AA. Board bricks and I double him up.

A little while later, I'm UTG again with AKo and raise it up. A short stacked opponent (I played with this guy before too but I can't remember his name, sorry, Robert maybe?) pushes all in behind me for the third time in maybe five hands. After the rebuy period had ended and he had talked about surrendering his stack and rebuying to the full starting stack previously but he had decided not to since no one else was either, so he had greatly upped his aggression and was kind of going for broke at this point. Folds around to the infamous Bruce on my right (I do know this guy as I played once with him before) and he just calls. Maybe my worst hand of the night but I think I'm maybe flipping with the original raiser or I have him dominated. Bruce's call makes me think I probably have him dominated as well - plus I do have some history with him. I ship my stack and Bruce calls flipping over KK *sigh*. Original raiser has QQ. No Ace comes and I'm crippled. I hang on for a few more hands and we redraw for final table.

I'm in desperate push/fold territory and I'm forced to lay down some playable hands after there is action before me. I score a double up when it's folded to the button who makes a steal attempt. I look down at A5o and ship it. Bfill in BB gets out of the way. Button calls my tiny reraise with 87o. She fans out the flop with an 8 in the window but next card is my A which holds. I'm still very short though at this point.
A few hands later I'm dealt 66 in late position. I can't remember if it was a limped pot or for a standard raise, but there's two opponents in preflop and I elect to squeeze ship my stack. I get two callers, one with JJ and the other I can't remember, maybe AK or AQ. I turn a beautiful 6 and triple up to a somewhat respectable stack size and I have some confidence that maybe I can complete this comeback.

Sadly, it was not meant to be. With the blinds getting pretty high now, I open shove UTG with AQo. It folds around to who I think is a fairly decent player. He tanks for a bit before finally calling me with 99. Bfill is also all in on the hand after losing the previous hand and being left with only 200 in chips. Board bricks for me and Bfill as I lose yet another coin flip race and finish 7th.

Overall, I feel like I played alright, just got unlucky in some spots. I felt like I had a good feel for the table and my opponents so there's not too much more I can ask for. Cash game wasn't going to run despite me agreeing to multi-table the tournament and the cash game if the three players standing around busted were willing to play, but no dice.

Bruce was nowhere as bad as I was worried about. When I had played with him previously he was much slower but is kind of entertaining to listen to while he mumbles to himself lol. I think I picked up a big tell on him though so I'll play with him again for sure.

Thanks for the fun night Bfill. Great host. Congrats to Christine for beating all us guys. I will be back again for sure, especially if you run a cash game night.
  • Oh and LOL at the guy that sat down, saw my dog, and asked for his money back:

I thought we did pretty well on the smoking too with it all being outside... he should come to one of the $20 hotbox games!!!
  • Thanks for hosting Andrew. Fun time as always. I also thought that keeping the smoking outside helped, you only got a whiff of it when the door opened. Also, the new 2nd poker table was awesome.

Bruce was more reserved than the last time I played with him. There is always a good group that plays and are laid back enough to make for a fun, competitive evening.
