Is the Death of the Forum Indicative of the State of Poker in Ontario?

Give that most of the forum posts from Ontario, I am curious if the lack of activity is mirroring the poker scene over there? I have not been back to ON since 2008 and wonder what is going on out there wrt pokerz.

  • i don't think it is. poker in ontario isn't great compared to other provinces obviously, but i don't think it's on a decline at the moment.

honestly, i've stopped posting a lot on here because it feels like i'm just talking to myself nowadays (and i don't need the forum to do that). i still lurk but what's the point of my posting/commenting when no one else ever responds/cares? i honestly felt like i was personally carrying the forum for a little while as i always post in off topic and i was the only one posting in strat threads. but like i said, the lack of anyone ever responding has led me to stop trying.

glad you are back (for the moment) GTA. hopefully you can get some people riled up and posting again.
  • I wouldn't say its dead, but it isn't great. Brantford sucks. Casino Niagara sucks. Not a huge fan of the E-tables at Mohawk & Woodbine.

But then you see things like the Royal Cup, Buzzards games, Moose's games, etc, etc, and it gives hope.

Great for guys like me who just want to play after work against good guys for smaller stakes. For someone looking to grind though? LOL yeah Ontario would not be my choice.
  • It isn't great out east for sure. On a Sunday you can get one 1/2 table and one 2/5 table if your lucky, unlucky and there is two 1/2 tables. Even on weekends poker doesn't run 24 hours and closes up for 8 hours at 4 am Saturday morning. I'll see if PEI is better in June when I head there for the weekend.
  • I have more poker options these days than I ever had. There seem to be a lot more 2/5+ games running so maybe it feels like there is less poker as 1/2 is less common and most of the population can afford these lower limits?
  • I took a few months off from poker and the forum...when did AcidJoe move to Halifax??
  • I honestly can't remember the last live game I played and when I did those were just home games (which I love and miss). Online, I think I played once or twice in the past year. As for the forum, I haven't had much time for it as in December I started working for a contractor who expects 10hr days or more seven days a week for the most part. I'm not sure I'll be working for him much longer, still thinking about that. I still check in daily to see if any maintenance spammer banning is necessary and to see what's up.

I have noticed that posting traffic on here has dropped like a rock though. Strategy posts are effectively gone.

As usual, I blame Trigs. FU Trigs. (it's been a while, had to work that in somehow)
  • obvs my fault. i drove all the crazies away.
  • 10 years after the poker boom, you are a winning player and either don't need strategy discussion or are happy with your game and don't care to develop it further or you have long ago gone busto. Either way, strategy discussion is pretty much moot.

Most of the active discussion is either on staking, live tournaments, meetups, home games etc and the off topic section. I don't really see much drop off in those areas. Many have quit online poker and prefer to play live anyways.

I have always viewed poker as a profitable social game. ie something fun that pays me money. I think most of the regs see it that way too. In other words poker has essentially returned to the days pre 2005.

A few months ago I moved to Halifax. Got tired of commuting for 4 hours a day and the Bull Shit that went along with it.

    Well said Rob!
  • Home games and home satellite are good here in Ontario.

[OPT] Orangeville Poker Tour has awarded 19 Seats to this years WSOP and still have one more satellite this Saturday.
  • I think Moose has it pretty dialed. Those who want strategy discussion are likely getting at 2p2.

Did BC never come together for you GTA?
  • Yup . . . I don't even have any on-line sites on my laptop any more. Just cannot be bothered with it. I keep coming here for the hell of it, and to see if any games are out there. I keep pushing the wife to move west of the GTA so that all the Kitchener Cambridge Guelph games will be easier to get to . . . so far no joy.
  • Hey Milo, just tell her by moving, the money you save on car insurance will pay your mortgage.
  • I used to come here and did post but the trollers got to me and I just lurk sometimes.Like maybe once a week.
  • Dinobot got me hooked on something else with his Razor thread . . . almost as bad as Poker chip and card acquisition.

So who are the trollers who got to you? It's not like you have been here a long time, not even a year yet... There are many that are 10yrs+.

Any public forum has people who like to troll and make comments, it's very common. Trolling here is way milder than 2plus2 or even my seniors forum.....

This is something I just don't understand, one of my I/T cohorts is moving here from Cambridge and even though he will be a 2 min drive from the office vs 35 min prior, he will pay 20% more for his insurance. Makes no sense to me...

Most accidents occur close to home. most of his travel will be in that "close to home" danger zone. He should have moved to London.
  • My insurance went down considerably moving to Halifax even though I am now driving to work. Previously I was insured for "pleasure driving" under 20K a year.
  • Agree so much with op. Forum is dead. Posted a question and got one reply. Gonna start a discussion/strategy/challenge/general rant thread in about a month roughly as gonna start dipping my toe into poker in general in fallview as beering heavily next 4/5 weeks with things coming up. Everyone better give some replys.

Also put my hand up I am terrible at responding to stuff. Nearly 1k post in 2p2 but only two here. I will go out of my way to post at least two or three times week from now on

    Does this count as one.

    This.

Poker has returned to the sub-culture world. Don't get me wrong, it's still popular among those who chose to learn and play but you don't see as many total randoms trying it out anymore. At least in our casino.
  • As I live in the sticks outside Woodstock about 25min from Brantford tourneys and 30 from Cambridge, 40ish from London, if I had the time I am in with enough circuits I can find a game of some sort any night of the week more less, its all who you want to fit in with, yes home games are fun and social and so on, totally how I treat it...to get in with the Londoners is actually challenging, you have to find one to know one and then your in, an email list basically that's 50+ long.
  • If I show up at your casino Johnny would I be a total random? Please....

Only because you've lost so much weight, I wouldn't recognize you!
  • I blame Blondefish.
  • I have been playing more tournys at Brantford and the numbers are decent.

Fallsview is a different story, it has slowed down a fair bit. Saturday night there were only 10 tables going. I know compared to most you here my poker skills are pretty weak bit i still find Fallsview to be very profitable on a Fri or Sat night. There were three regulars on our table and we all made out very well, people would sit down and blow off between 500-1000 and leave. Guys were calling off their stacks with straight draws with a possible flush or full house on board.....even i know thats bad pokerz.
