idea - rake free online poker site

a poker site that is completely funded by sponsors and advertising money. before you can sit down and play at any table, you have to watch a 30 second commercial. every 30 minutes (or whatever) play is stopped for another 30 second advertisement.

yeah, it would be a little bit annoying, but people might think it's worth it if there is absolutely zero rake taken - or at least an insanely low rake.

what do you guys think?

EDIT: it could have running ads along the bottom of the screen as well. maybe they could also offer an optional monthly fee for those who are willing to pay for no advertisements.

  • first you have to figure out what attracts players to a site. really give it some thought.

look at where low rake sits in that list. how much of an impact does rake have?

sponsors will pay based on how much business they think you can bring. (how many players do you have? what type of players are they? will they pay for that product?)

now decide how you are going to fund the other factors that bring in the players, which will bring in the sponsors. you will need very deep pockets to get this off the ground. and there are numerous hurdles.

    darb's conclusion: bitcoin ftw
my conclusion: it will not happen in the foreseeable future. it would be nice if some startups put some pressure on stars to lower their rake, tho...

    I don't believe they are.
  • What if you opened a bar with poker tables and people bring their own chips and play rake free cash games, self dealt. Would that be allowed in Ontario? You profit from the game but no rake is charged? Its like a pool hall having a couple poker tables available. Could you charge an hourly rate to use the table? Your earnings are not dependant on the outcome of each hand?
  • What about a video rental store with 16 poker tables? Could you charge a monthly membership and have people qualify for freerolls into casino run tournaments?

That's one hell of an idea, why didn't we think of that earlier.....

Nope, illegal. The bar would profit by the people buying food and drinks. Charging an hourly rate to use the table is also illegal.
