you're not as good as you think you are

there are definitely some people on here that need to read this article (and i'm not just referring to poker skills).

Poker and the Dunning-Kruger Effect: You?re Not as Good as You Think
Apparently, incompetent people don’t realize their incompetence even when they are confronted with competence.

  • Yeah, its been like that forever. Rarely do people enter into any event, anything they like, sports, job, rec, toys, specialities (even if bad at them) and be like "shit i suck as this" or at the very least will never admit it to anyone but themselves in their mind.

I just cant fathom most humans sitting down at a poker table and being like "I suck so hard i wonder what ill lose today" even the biggest fish will have ego and be misguidedly confidant or they wouldnt play the game.

I think most people would prefer to take the easy route and remain ignorant of the correct way to do things, as its much harder to break out of a mold of incompetence. Easier to mentally backflip the wrong actions into your brain believing YOU ARE THE BEST #1.
  • I've been told I'm a bad player when I crush someone with my 5 2 off. But then again I've also been told I'm a bad player for check raising people all in when I have aces pre. If you play ABC poker constantly are you really considered a good player? Or just an easy target at the table to play against. Ps that's just my oppinion for cash games
  • It isn't so much how others perceive you but how you perceive yourself.

For example, I like to say that I am well aware of how bad I play, because I know that I do make plays that are sub-optimal. Not always, but I am under few illusions as to my skill level compared to others on this site.

There are other players on this site who will be quite certain that every move they make at the table is the right one, every strategy flawless, and that is who is being referenced in the link.

The article is more about self awareness, but that is just my opinion. I am sure I will be corrected shortly.

Somebody around here once used the tagline about poker and sex being two things that everyone thinks they're good at, but at which few people really know what they're doing.

I'm interested in the concept of check raising pre.
  • I think you need to find a level you are comfortable with. When the stakes are too low, I play crappy poker with no regard for the $$$. If I play too high limits, again I play too tight which is losing poker. In the 2/5 -5/5 range, I'm ok but I don't have the instincts that some players have. Although I seem to survive at these levels.

I agree with what your saying. I use the time driving to the casino to bring myself back down to earth buy trying to guess how much money I'm going to lose I also use it as a kind of mental motivation too because I know I'm not perfect even tho I think I am. The poker and sex line is funny if you always cum first you must be the best right?

Playing $1/$2 tonight with Mr. PF tonight so will see if I can keep it together. Although it will likely be very deep.
  • Mr. PF is one of the rare players I know that is actually better than he thinks he is in poker. No more freeroll shots at big money tho.

  • But I can never fold aa pf...
  • Can I pose the question as to why you folded to the chip leader besides the fact your playing on stars lol
  • That fold makes zero sense. There are no micro stacks about to go out. Even if this is a satty and only 6 seats are awarded, there is no guarantee that someone else will go out before you.
That is the worst fold I have ever seen.
  • I SUCK at poker, and no NOTHING about strategy or ICM or Nash, but if you are NOT GOING TO JAM in this spot, WHEN?!?

It was a 20-seat satellite with 21 players left. I was closely observing the other tables and there were a bunch of very short stacks, including a couple that could not even cover the ante and were automatically all-in next hand. After watching the other tables fold while in hand-for-hand, it was easy to fold for the next hand and into the money.

The worst play would have been to get involved with the dominant chipleader and have >= 30% chance of being eliminated in 21st, instead of > 99% chance of folding to the win. As 13th/20 in chips, I got the same $200 prize as this chipleader.
  • It was obviously a direct reply to my buddy pkrfce9's light-hearted post about folding AA. He, pokerJAH and I always joke around with each other about folding AA preflop. I even put an emoticon on top of the post.

It was the right move, but I don't think it qualifies as a genius move. I know LOTS of players, including me, who make that same play EVERY time.

I reserve the genius tagline for moves made by Phil Gordon.:D
