Chip purchase.

Do we still have chip enthusiasts here?
I'm looking to buy a set as a Christmas gift, but I'm unsure of how to decide which denominations to buy, and from whom. I'd also love some guidance on quality.

Most often hosting 10 person SNGs followed (hopefully quickly!) by 1/2 max 500 cash. I'd love to find something that can do double duty, and, if possible, keep the cost under $500.

Any direction/discussion appreciated! :)

  • Double duty will be tough unless you go non-denominated and then your choices go waaay down.

You are a creative type, I would go the Chinese compression molded clay route and have your own labels made, then you can personalize the gift but make them non-denom.

Prices seem high compared to chiptalk member prices so I would contact them, lay out what you want and then try and cut a deal. They are dealmaker type guys.

Similar chips that I had made:

  • Thanks Moose! Any tips for deciding how many of which? What would you want to pay/per for those?
  • For 1/2 I would go:
    100 $1s
    400 $5s
    100 $25s

    600 chips

    and let cash play

for a sng bare min per player:

    8 $25s
    8 $100s
    4 $500s
    2 $1000s

    $5k starting stack

    Total
    80 25
    80 100
    40 500
    20 1000

Usually you wouldn't need to colour up in a sng but you could add 30 $1000s for colourups

    250 chips

If you go denominated that would be 850 chips total.

There is another preorder going on right now which fits your budget. Again these are Chinese made compression clay chips. Prices will go up once they land from China.

For custom order, I would try for around .40 ea and about .06-.15 for labels (not sure of cost there but I also don't know if they are putting the stickers on or you are). But again, you are a good negotiator, you could ask for their best price once you know your totals and then push them for a cheaper deal than that. You catch the owner in a good mood and lots of inventory and they will go way down in price.
  • Here's some better shots of the PGI chips, note that the 8V chips in the 2nd pic are also avail if you ask.

  • I found some PGI pricing from a couple years ago, so this would be the rock bottom price. If you get close to this, you did well.

CT member pricing: .43 custom printed/assembled
.40 custom printed decals YOU apply
  • Just giving you ideas. The background does not have to be white. Many people colour match the labels to the chips

These are the 8v colours, the same ones I used for my sng set.

  • I'm in the process of getting my own chips done as well for my rentals. I have just under 3k chips to relabel but they're going to look pretty decent for cheap. Under $0.30/chip (chip and label cost).

  • Moose, thanks again. You were the first person I thought of when I was considering how/what to purchase. I remember liking the feel of your chips..I wish they came in more muted colour/aesthetically pleasing configs..but I suppose that would get out of my budget

    Tony, your tables are gorgeous!
  • If you go with ceramics you can get them printed with anything/colour you want but you need some bright colours because in some lighting it can be hard to tell the chips apart. Pgi also makes ceramics. But some people don't care for them. The Chinese compression moulded are the closest thing to real casino chips, though some casinos do use ceramics.

    You played with these ceramics.

  • Thoughts:

I like to put much different graphics on each denomination. It makes it easier on colour blind people to tell the differences.

In an idea world we never have to make change.

It's nicer to have more chips so you don't have to keep making change.

If you play with high quality chips you won't want to play with lower quality chips again.

Go for the highest quality you can get.

Lots of people get a set. And then get a better quality set ... and so on.

    Cash game sets:

You can get real casino quality chips, at a casino for $1 each.

If they have $0.25 chips *ALWAYS* get some.

You could just buy five racks of $5 chips and let $100 bills play.

That would cover your cash game needs.
  • Thanks Kristy.

If you're looking a full custom ceramic then you should talk to Joe and Palm Gaming. They have pretty decent chips and a good rate. A friend of mine bought some James Bond theme ceramics from them for much cheaper than I would have expected.

It's hard to get 1 set for both cash and tourney, you'll likely have to get 2 sets or just one big set that covers all denoms.
  • You guys have *officially* talked me out of a double duty set. I'll buy a tournament set later.

Moose: you said some people don't care for clay, why is that?

Reef: Thanks for the colour blind point. I'm mildly embarrassed that I didn't think of it… My dad is colourblind.
-if I only want to play 1/2 or bigger… What would be the benefit of having $.25 chips?

Question: if I was going to go super big… And only buy a bit at a time...is there a huge upgrade to be had? We have Christmas, birthday, Valentine's Day, Easter (yes we buy Easter presents) all happening in the first few months of the year. If I doubled my budget --and focussed solely on cash--would I see a huge, noticeable, upgrade in quality?
  • If you're ok with "off the rack chips", straight poker is having a sale right now on some of their midline chips. They won't be the quality of the ones seen above, but they will fit your budget.
  • $500 max 1/2...I'm first on the wait list...oh wait, .you got to pay for that basement some how..what's the rake?
  • Lol, no rake. My husband doesn't get out as much as he'd like to, to play. I was thinking I'd buy him a set of good chips and hire a dealer for a monthly poker night with his buddies.

[then I'm gonna ask my teenager for baby sitting coupons for Mother's Day...and take all their money. ;)]

I was shopping out the recommendations itt to see if I cod find a U.S. supplier who charged less...and I keep running into weights. What is the ideal? Can you give me any tips on terminology? I'm seeing HUGE variance in price and I'm having trouble figuring out the difference.
  • Siri evidently hears "cod" when I talk about other people's poker games.
    Very fishy!

    Great questions!

Get samples!! http://www.apachepokerchips.com/pokerchipsamples.html Or ask Moose!! Or go to Poker Chips and Poker Chip Advice - ChipTalk.net and see for yourself!

Personally I'd go with the Championship Poker Series chips Moose recommended. http://www.apachepokerchips.com/championship-poker-series.html
  • No I said some people don't like ceramics as much as clay.

Reef gave you a bunch of random points. The comment about the quartets was in reference to their rarity in casinos and that if you ever find some, in general you should collect as many as you can because you can sell them on eBay for 4x face value minimum. Conversely since casinos know this, if they have them at all, they guard them very closely because they are losing money on every that disappears into someone's pocket.

Hands down best value and quality for the money would be to use either of the two links I gave you. Best value would be to get in on the preorder link I gave but I feel you might prefer custom labeled chips. If you go custom ceramic through PGI then it would be a bit cheaper.

If you go with a used casino set, you are looking at a min of $1-1.50 per chip and there is nothing out there right now in quantity so you would have to get lucky and buy someone else's set from chiptalk. Black Friday is coming and thechiproom usually has a Sale but afaik they have almost nothing in stock.

  • One of the issues you might run into if you buy "a little at a time is colour variance. Try as they might, batch mixing does not always stay "true" from one to the next. Not even with ceramics, as I found out when adding to one of my sets. If you are going to buy $1.00 chips, I would buy all you need in one shot. Same for $5.00 chips, and so on. At least that way, your denominations will be consistent on an individual level.

And yeah, moose's links are to some pretty nice chips.

Tip: Go with $20.00 chips for your cash set. No one buys in with $25.00 bills, do they?

Nah, If people are buying in with $20 then just let $20's play. It's not a big deal to give them 4 red.
  • I was thinking about when they drop 6 x $20.00 for a reload. Give 'em 6 $20s and get back to the game. Someone at the table can break it down for them.
  • $20 chips rule.
  • My next cash set will have them for sure. And yes, Kristy, there is ALWAYS a "next" set.
  • $20 chips make a lot of sense to me. I really hate letting money play 'cause I'm a bit of a germ freak.

Thanks so much guys! This has been seriously helpful. I set aside a couple hours this afternoon to do more research, and read the links you sent. Any other info I should get a handle on?

Also, would you be happy to get a gift like this/with the pledge of a monthly poker game, food, dealer for Christmas? I'm worried that it might not have enough "wow" factor.
(We live in a state where there are no casino NLHE/PLO games and the best local stuff conflicts with GW's work schedule)

Absolutely happy! Personally I think that's a huge amount of wow factor! The gift that keeps giving all year 'round on a monthly basis. Don't even question this as a gift Kristy. It's great.
  • Getting high quality chips will be appreciated by ANY serious poker player. Getting a guaranteed game to go along WITH said chips just gets you MORE brownie points.

Hell, my wife was giddy when I bought her a set of roulette chips, and she is not nearly as "into" chips as I am.
