Mountains of Canmore or Oceans of White Rock?

Where would you rather live?

I have an opportunity to purchase similarly performing practices in either area. I spent the weekend in White Rock/South Surrey and am leaning towards BC. I have previously lived in WA State and am familiar with the climate, etc. so that is not an issue. I think the proximity to so many cool areas (Vancouver, Seattle, direct flights to Hawaii) combined with the beauty of the local area is probably going to make it a winner. Canmore would be a not so bad second choice if needed.

Poker is likely much better in Calgary:( than the lower mainland BC.

  • Both areas are great, I think it comes down to lifestyle more than anything.

I'd probly go with White Rock just for convenience of city life.

Canmore is a little too far away from Calgary.

That's true...1 hour to Grey Eagle:(
  • Hey GTA, I've lived in Vancouver for just over 8 years now, and I can't recall a day where I regretted it. You mentioned you're familiar with the climate so that's no issue.

In addition to the things you mentioned, you've got Portland just a few hours further down the road, in addition to great skiing, hiking, beaches, etc, in Washington, BC, and Oregon. Tons of great restaurants and craft breweries. There's literally three craft brews within a km of my house, and new ones opening all the time. That interests me, but I can't assume it interests everyone.

Bellingham Washington, about forty minutes from White Rock not accounting for the border waits has the lowest airport taxes in the USA last I checked and offers direct flights to Vegas, LA, San Fran, Phoenix, Hawaii for really good prices. I haven't paid more than a couple hundred bucks all in for a round trip flight to Vegas in years.

The poker won't be as good you're likely right, but the River Rock Casino has had a larger numbers of 2-5 and even 2-5-10 games running recently. The Edgewater runs PLO daily, and on the weekends often has a 5-10 hold em PLO mix. Fraser Downs casino even has a 5-10 limit mix running on Thursdays. Apparently a bunch of old fellas playing a mix of O8/Stud8/Razz. My guess is you'll find a decently soft seat.

Good luck with it. Shoot me a pm if there's anything I can do for you in terms of info about the area or whatever else. I can recommend you a good realtor if you need also.

Thanks for all the info. We will have to go play some poker if I make it out there.

What about the hard rock near coquitlam... Any poker there?

I'll pm you if things are heading towards a move... It will depend on the price negotiations etc.
  • When I spend 7 figures on a business I like to gather as much information as possible, even if it is just info about local poker games as poker is an enjoyable hobby of mine... You should try playing someday. Certainly you don't think that this is a primary source for my decision.

I also used detailed demographic studies, professional consultants and real world experiences to formulate a decision... But a good plo game doesn't hurt in the decision process.

Thanks again for another zero content post...3 ITT alone. If only I could say this is some sort of record for you... Sadly not as it seems that every post you make in every thread you enter provides zero info. I guess baby needs his bottle.

I'll let you know if I need a mover who specialises in couches.

I see that your previous posts have been deleted... Was this by you or the mods? As always I have to enquire as to why you troll threads on this forum when you do not play poker or contribute any knowledge to any topics on here.
  • Wait, we have to post valuable content and play as much as we used to?!?

    banned again already?
  • Seriously, what the hell did I miss? Fed posts a ton of (low) content that usually makes me laugh. Why is he such a bee in all your bonnets?
  • Yeah, that's what I thought.

I love chirping as much as the next girl, but this whole sword-of-Damocles thing is unfair to Fed.

[Note: not necessarily talking to GTA--at least he actively engages and is fun to read. More the chorus of yes-men, and the over-the-top tight rope Fed's expected to walk. His posts are rarely more off-point than mine and I'm not experiencing any backlash.]

I agree, we're on the same page.

  • Well, to stand up for the other side...

Speaking for myself, and likely others that have spoken out against Fed and his other forum buddy, we have all been threatened with banning if we continue to "poke the bear".

The problem with Fed that I have had personally is a few things. His first notable impact on the forum was when he was accused of stealing from another forum member. This lasted several days if not weeks. Now, I have been told this was cleared up and was some kind of "misunderstanding", but that was never made public as far as I know. I know that I got a hand slap after Fed posted a BAP and I pointed out this history. But I was just a fan of making sure his history was open knowledge to everyone, especially considering the fact that his original persona of "Fedh8r" was about a dozen incarnations ago.

This brings us to a second point. He has been banned repeatedly over the past several years, continuing to return under various guises, with new back / cover stories for each. He always manages to reveal himself after falling into old habits, such as trolling and concocting fantastical life brags, and was banned again and again and again. However, a bit ago, suddenly he was allowed back on, with no real explanation (along with his forum buddy that we will get to in a second). He was to be kept "on a short leash", and was good for a while, but history repeats and what not, so he continued contributing little more than animated WWE gifs and old confused ladies. When confronted he busted out some anti-semitic language directed at an old adversary. This brings us to the third issue.

Fed really came to prominence when he paired off with another forum member (who is also back on a "short leash", but admittedly hasn't overstepped any boundaries). Fed initially was little more than a troll, but with this other forum member, they became virtual BFF's. The other forum member started contributing to various debate threads, but their rambling, nonsensical contributions were hardly helpful or productive. Fed backed him up repeatedly. When this other member started posting holocaust denying videos, and (generously speaking) hinted at a Jewish conspiracy running the world, he was banned. Fed stood by his man, and would advocate for his return repeatedly, but that only happened when this other member also came back in the guise of another name. Again, this other forumer is back under a new name, and no explanation given to his return being allowed.

In summary, Fed has ignored the rules, and been frustratingly protected by the moderators here despite his non-productive contributions. People like myself who have said he shouldn't be here have instead been threatened with being banned. Personally, I have actually tried to help fed out, even met him for lunch once when he was in town. I have tried to let him know (privately) when he was getting out of line, but despite this, he thumbs his nose and does what he wants.

Anyways. Since the newer guy there was confused, and since Kristy was out of action so long. There's a nice summary. I'm not sure if this post will be around in a bit, or for that matter if I'll be off on some kind of enforced vacation. Wildbill / Compuease - you guys know I like you both just fine, but I have voiced my opinion about the error in these calls. To the rest of you, odds are I'll see you in two weeks.

  • ^ Well said.

    Back on track:

BC sounds pretty awesome but I would imagine cost of living would be considerably higher. We're also about due for the west coast to break off and fall into the ocean... Depending on how paranoid you are.
  • my personal issues with fed were his outright and unprovoked hatred for me. he would troll everything i posted and every thread i started. i tried to openly ask him what his problem with me was but he refused to answer and continued trolling my posts. i PMed him a couple times and tried to communicate that way just to find out what i could do to get him to stop attacking me. he refused to respond.

in his newer personas he has ignored me for the most part, which i am thankful for, but i don't forget what he's done and as far as i'm concerned he's not forgiven for what he's done mostly because he has done nothing to make me think he has changed or that he is sorry for the way he has attacked me and others on this forum.

EDIT: and my vote is for White Rock for what it's worth (never lived in either place though).

Enough is enough. Can you please put a cork in it ?

To err is human, to forgive, divine.
  • Tough decision. You've lived in Alberta for quite a while, so you're used to harsh winters. White Rock despite being just south of Vancouver proper doesn't get the constant drizzle and grey skies people often mention about Vancouver.

When I lived out west, I never spent a ton of time in White Rock but the people I knew who lived there absolutely loved it. Most of them hated it when you called White Rock "South Surrey" as they didn't like the association. Can't blame them really having spent several years working in Surrey.

Hi betamax. Please post some examples of meaningful posts fed has made on this forum.

What years were you working in Surrey? South Surrey seems quite nice and maybe a bit affordable.

Uh.... I'm thinking from around 1993 to 2000. That being said, I was working at a halfway house for federal inmates in the Whalley area which is certainly not the nicest part of town. Very high crime rate, very bad drug problems, everywhere. Again, that was a long time ago I guess. Yep, Surrey did get nicer as you went more south as I remember.

HOWEVER, you wuz def. trolling in that BAP thread...and it was great! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and wish that the powers that be had just replaced the anti-Semitic comment and left the rest alone for our viewing pleasure.

Thanks for that Mark, it really did help to understand. One thing I would say is that this is Fed's schtick..he's a GREAT troll. Entertaining, line-pushing, etc. and he plays his roll with a lot of panache. As you've said, sticking with his man, posting low-content asides, and I seriously still laugh at his avatar every time I even think about it. MorpheusWatLady-Hybrid 4 mod!

If you don't like the train, why always try to be the conductor? Let it wreck, and let people like Fed, and I, have our fun. Your opinion of "Worthwhile content" is not the only measure..I get a lot of enjoyment out of the tangential crap, and would ban the guy that always responds with stats and numbers (at least in OT) before I ever gave up Fed.

I think I can get behind the decision to troll you. You're completely likable, active, and a great poster...you're a perfect mark for a troll-persona because you will engage in-- and insight-- defense.

I just feel like this would all be a LOT more fun if we all acknowledged that his e-character is likely a work of fiction, which is a valid use of the interweb. The real Fed loves his family, and cats. Talks sports. Makes jokes. Works hard. And is a guy you want to have a beer with.

I can say that I've not personally contributed much in the means of strat of late, hardly post as often at all.

But Fed in his recent-time, gif posting? Wouldn't have ever been an issue.. however, he went beyond, and was banned (quite rightly). Then he ignored the rules, came back again, and again, and again, and again.... There is seriously no bridges left to burn here.
