two pair shared pot

we had a heated argument during a holdem game recently.
on the table we had 10c10hQs5h6h.
two all in calls were made and the players both had queens to share the pot, however one player had a king kicker which beat the table, and I was under the impression that the best five cards make the hand yet the other player insisted that the pot is split no matter what with a matching pair.
what should have been done, and does anyone have a link to an official site with these rules.
thanks

Yes, I guess that is the real question isn't it? :D

    Yes the K kicker wins.
  • 8. Two Pair. Two cards of one rank, two cards of another rank and a kicker of a third rank. For example JJ882. KK332 defeats QQJJ9. 99554 defeats 9933A. 7766A defeats 7766Q. Two hands of the same ranks, like KKQQ5 versus KKQQ5 split the pot.

This is correct in Texas holdem. Use any combination of cards on board and your own hole cards to make a 5-card poker hand.

In your example, if one player had KQ and another player had Q9 (not Qh 9h), the player with the KQ wins the whole pot.

  • K kicker takes it down.

Just wondering though, what did the host say? Most home games, the host has the last word, and everyone agrees to live to that word. If he said the high kicker took it down, the other person should have just accepted the bad beat and move on.

Even when I host, I know most of the guys at the table are by far more experienced than I am, but they all accept the fact that I am the final word at the table. I assume that is what it is like at most if not all home games.
  • The most terrible thing that I noticed with Poker book content is that they don't even bother to teach the hands - especially the contested ones.

It's the best of 5 cards.

Here's a crazy online game that I played:

    I'm holding a pair of 8's

    The flop comes down:

    6 ? 6

    The Turn:

    6

    The River:

    6

Now what's funny about this example is after the first three 6's I obviously have a full house:

    666 88

But by the fourth 6 ( four of a kind ) my hand is rendered useless because my hand becomes 6666 with 8 kicker.

The two other guys at the table each had K 9 , and K 4 respectively.

The Kings cancelled each other out so the guy with K 9 won ( 6666 9 Kicker )

This should be a split pot, with each player having the 5-card hand 6666K.

The 9 and 4 (and the 7 on board) are irrelevant.

    yup, that's a spilt
but I just thought of something.
IF that were how it played out, the Ks cancelled and we relyed on the other kicker, that would DRASTICALLY change poker as we know it ...
Think about how many idiots play online that play K/2soooooooooted /etc, if they finally had to 'think' about that deuce, wow ...
I dunno, I'm just going on a rant here :D

Ya, and that "third pair" would become live when the board pairs twice (with overpairs) too I suppose? :)
