$500 to $5000, possible of impossible?

Dave,

$500 to $5,000
you have to stick to 300bb bankroll requirements could a player possibly get that done in six months?

I've heard Negreanu wanted to go $500 - $10,000 I believe, just wanted to know your thoughts on the matter of growing a bankroll.

  • Sure it's possible.

At some point, poker is about win rate and hours of play.

    So, assume 1 BB/hour.

And... we will cheat a little and wade right into the $1-2 game (only 250 BB's).

To get to $1200 will be 350 hours then we move to $2-4.

To get to $1800 will be 150 hours then we move to $3-6.

To get to $3000 will be 200 hours then we move to $5-10.

To get to $5000 will be 200 hours and viola.

Total hours: 900. That's 150 hours a month or about 40 hours of poker a week.

So... to make it you are going to have to play A LOT of hours. And, you cannot have any drain on your income (like rent) so it will be tough.

Also, don't be tempted into a high variance events like tournaments. Grind it out. Hour after arduous hour. Keeping your discipline will be the hardest thing since sitting in the $1-2 game you will constantly tempted by those $3-6 game.

Good luck. Keep us up to date.

  • P Hound, I would also highly recommend you look into bonus whoring to assist in achieving your goals. At 1/2 and 2/4 this can add as much or more to your bankroll as winning 1-2 BB/hr. Be careful to track your results so that you know what portion of your winnings are from play and what portion are from the bonusses.

    * edited to add... if you are talking about online play of course
  • Not only possible, it can be done from $50. No need for $500 bucks. The trick is that the person doing this must have many different dimensions and lots and lots of experience at each limit they're playing.

Almost every pro story starts with "I played a little and got hooked on the game....for the first XXX times I busted out, but kept going back". I haven't heard of one story of a pro that started beating the game immediately. So, just like when you're in the game patience is what gets the money.

My guess is that one would need at least 500-800 hrs or 70-80,000 hands of positive experience before they can run $50 into $5000. It can be done in 3 months.

The toughest part is not going on ANY sort of tilt. Even one tilt session will set you back a month, maybe even bring you down to 0.

You've made many posts asking how to beat the game. Can you please answer one? Why not set a goal to make 1BB/100 hands for 1000 hands? That would put you into the top 25-30 % of players.

    Cheers

  • I went from $100 to $5000 (or just about) in 6 months at the beginning of last year. Very doable, particularly if you are playing online and taking advantage of all the bonus offers out there. Can be done quicker, but it's a comfortable goal for someone with a full time job playing in their spare time without it completely dominating their life.
  • As a sidenote, it is probably easier and faster to accumulate $5,000 working at a "normal" job.

    You mean $10-$20?

    $15-$30.... 3 chip games = normal

These high-variance events are like sharks to blood. I'm just watching everyone sign up for the 215 dollar tourney at Stars right now...quick kill mindset...

Dave: are you saying the best way to gain experience or build your roll is to grind out the ring games and ignore the tournaments?

Perhaps a "ring vs, tourney" thread exists somewhere...

  • Tournaments can be hard on the bankroll because you can go on some LONG dryspells.

    An example...

For sake of argument, assume that ring game hourly rate and ring game tournament rate at the same. The problem is that the tournament graph will have long down cycles and brief huge wins. The ring game graph will tend upwards at a nice steady pace.

If you have the patience and understanding to make it through the withering, long down spells... leap into tournament world. There is one member of Team Canuck Poker who plays tournaments exclusively and he does very well at the end of the year... but there can be some lean months.
  • Thanks Dave...I suspect you realized that I am referring to the on-line world vs. B&M...just checking...

  • I don't seperate the two of them.
