High Roller

Well, I reserved my copy through Rogers video, and yes, they did get MY copy of the DVD High Roller; The Stu Ungar story and one for rogers to rent out.

I watched it the first time, and then immediately watched it again! :) No jokes!

I loved it! Every second of every minute of that movie, it has shot right up the list of my favorite movies.

Now yes granted there is poker action in it, which is a good thing. But there is also a really good look at what his life was like, from when he was young too right before he died. This is a must see for any Stu Ungar fan.

Oh and by the way, I ordered a copy of the 1997 WSOP where Stu Ungar won the WSOP for the third time. They have the hole cards edited it, so it makes it more up to date and easier to follow. I got that in the mail two days ago, and I watched it about three times now.... lol can you tell I was on a couple days off from work? :) All I can say is that Stu Ungar is the most agressive poker player that I have ever seen, he makes Doyle Brunson and Gus Hansen seem tight lol! He was a great player and the thing was it played some hands that most people would never dream of. Small suited connectors, small connecting cards that are not suited. And he would always raise them like they were Kings. Or pocket Aces, preflop. After the flop he was so great at knowing where he was in the hand, and knowing where his opponent was, he just bet out and kept taking pot after pot, to be honest it was kinda scary lol.

But yeah, Stu Ungar (with the exception of the drug abuse) was the MAN!!!!!!!!

Rest In Peace You Poker Legend

My first thought from the error message was an access rights violation at the UNIX level.

    Did a search and found this on Vbulletins site;

    http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=109342

My first thing I would check is to make sure you rwxrwxrwx (chmod 777) to the avatar directory. You can set these through your FTP client.

  • back to high roller...as i'm sure a lot of you have, i've been looking forward to this movie for quite awhile. and being a canadian, i didn't get to see the starz presentation. having watched it a few times now, i'm going to add a few things to my quick comments up there.

-the stu ungar story was a movie waiting to happen! done.
-i was a little disappointed. i'm not sure why, it just didn't seem to reach the potential that the real-life story offered...when it was over, i just felt it was an ok movie.
-the actors did a fine job (well, one seemed a little out of place...ironic...since i understand he was around then)
-if you're watching this to see some great poker, sorry. not too much shown. it's a drama, not a poker movie...may be more gin than poker (which i think is true to life)
-a ton of things to verify that this was a low-budget movie, but overall, a good look to it.
-all-in-all, i would love to see a biography channel show about this guy!! a&e are you reading this??

love to hear what everyone else thought

Exactly how I felt about it. I was really excited to see it for its poker and gambling content, but really it was more based on his life and personal issues. I'm not disappointed with it, however I will not be buying it.

    Hey Sloth,

VB is my daytime job, so if there's any way I can help, please let me know.
  • I really loved the High Roller movie, because I am a Stu Ungar fan myself. Life and his poker/gin doings.

Anyways, for the peeps who had the question about where I got the 1997 WSOP tape. I have a friend online that has all the WSOP on videos. Dont ask me how he got them, he just did. I bought a few from him, I bought the 1981 and 82 videos for both of Ungars first World Championships, and then the 1997 one I just got recently... all good. Anyways, if any of you want to inquire about getting any of them, from 1979 on, I dont think he goes back before that.... just gimme a shout and I will see what I can do. :)

    Ho-Lee-Cow. Ok. I'll be in touch! Soooooon.
  • Apologies to those who loved the movie, but hey, forums are about opinions!

The first 20 minutes was terrible, because the kid playing the young Stu was possibly the worst child actor I've ever seen. The guy playing 'DJ' was a terrible actor too, and the script was, well, for the most part, terrible. I'm not going to pull any punches here... I hated this movie. Michael Imperioli was the only good thing about it.

To sum it up, the whole thing was very cheesy and contrived. Someone's good idea (the life story of a fascinating character) gone very very bad. I'm not being a 'poker snob' here... as a movie--with or without poker (and there wasn't much)--it sucked. And, the soundtrack was probably the worst in the history of film.
  • I dunno all aces I think I have to disagree here. Only cause I really LOVED the movie. Maybe because I am such a Stu Ungar fan, I dont know. The movie was really close to the happenings in his real life. Yeah there was a bit of hollywood in there, but most everything in that movie was true to life.

Yeah I will admit I didnt like the "DJ" character either, but hey every movie has it downfalls.

I guess just difference of opinions, lol, period, I loved the movie... :)
  • As you say, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. :)
  • I just got done watching the movie... and I will end up buying it... just to add it to my poker room movie collection!

I thought it was a great story, but just an alright movie... A movie about a legend is bound to disappoint!

  • LOL... well, in re-reading my 'review' I realize that I make it sound like it's produced by Satan. It might not be that bad. (But it might.) Part of my dislike might come from the fact that I was REALLY looking forward to this movie... the trailers looked good, and obviously I'm a fan of the subject matter. The movie as a whole, though, was downright cheesy. Some of the lines should have been accompanied by scrolling text along the bottom of the screen reading: "THIS IS THE MORAL OF THE STORY THIS IS THE MORAL OF THE STORY THIS IS TH..."
  • You see or hear about a movie and look forward to seeing it and then it disappoints.
Everyone I tell about Napoleon Dynamite thinks I'm nuts when they see it.

In any case Blockbuster didn't have it for me to rent last night so when I do check it out I'll give the "guy who was looking forward to it but then had his hopes of a great poker movie dashed by All Aces" review! LOL! :D

  • He sounds like the John Holmes of the Poker industry

If you can even say that... not sure any of the acting was good.

Not much poker at all.... and the seen with Mr. Miriuagi from Karate kid, when he tries to peg all the cards in his hand? Is that even possible?

As for the sound track... I kinda thought it was the best part BUT it didnt match the movie at all...

Really dissapointed, after cancelling my amazon order and driving half way across town casue I HAD to see it....

Well it seems you had this one right! If only Jerry Bruckhimer had produced it instead!!

What sucks is that being a poker fan you'd think that this would be a great movie.
It had so much promise but was really a dud.

Oh well i have to go watch rounders to get the memory of this movie out of my head.

  • I finally got my copy of High Roller and I really liked the movie.

If you were/are expecting a movie about poker then this isn't it. The movie is about Stu Ungar. At times it felt a little bit like an ofshoot of the Sopranos but what can I say, I like that show too.

Overall, good movie. Very happy with the purchase.

  • I've seen a bunch of copies at Queen Video ( Independent Video Store in Toronto ):

    Queen Video
    480 Bloor W  Toronto

    Queen Video
    412 Queen W  Toronto

    http://www.toronto.com/search?sort=rank-desc&cslink=cs_keyword_home&type=bridge&query=queen+video&context=generic&x=0&y=0

ie. why buy when you can rent it for a couple of bucks?
  • so anybody selling a used copy?
  • So do we get a review of rounders now? :wav:
  • I didn't mind this movie to much. The acting wasn't the best and I have to agree about the ages he was trying to portray. Like when he was younger in the late teens he looked 30ish, same as when he was suppose to be in the 40's. Basically the character didn't age from age 15-45. It's worth renting and watching once but I wouldn't buy it. I found it at my local blockbuster.
