A question of etiquette....or not?
This is not just a question directed towards Dave, as I would like everyone's opinion on it.
Dave, do you think it is right or wrong for someone to hast a tournament and play (and finish in money)?
I found most people don't seem to care, but at my tournament on Sunday after about 45 min. I was 2nd (about 22,000)in chips at my table and had knocked out a player. When the break came, I went for a smoke and was approached by two very close freinds who remarked "Hey Rob, how do you think people are going to take it if you cash in at your own tournament?, they may think it's fixed. We know it's not fixed, but what about the people that don't know you?".
So, I thought about it over my smoke, and decided to slowly lose chips. I payed to see every flop, called stupied raises and then would fold. I was first one out, and Josh and I thought it would be a good idea to announce that I was out first. Every one clapped and said "Thanks for the donation to the pot, haha".
At the next break, I had a few guy's that "know" of me and a few that didn't come up and say "supprised to see you out first, saw your stack and was hopin to play against you tonight".
I've been to tourney's of all kinds not just cards, and watched the organizer or their wife win. It has nevered bothered me, I have never thought "oh it's fixed" or anything. I just think that sometimes that's the way things go.
What do you guy's think?

That really sucks that you threw your game away. I have been to lots of "home" tourneys and have never had, or heard about a concern regarding the host winning.
I would guess that your buddies that put the bug in your ear were not regular poker players.
When you amassed your chips it was in front of everyone at your table right? So how could anyone have a concern?
You should have kept playing your best and if you did manage to get to the final table you would have had more time to make a proper judgement call at that point. You acted to quickly.. Imo.
I'd be about a million times more suspicious of this behaviour (from any player) compared to how suspicious I'd feel if an organizer won the tournament (i.e., typically not the least bit suspicious).

But then after, I thought....How the hell do you rig a Texas Hold em game....the only thing I could think of was people at the table working to push others out in order to finish upwards....then I thought why couldn't I play? Is it bad etiquette?
I'm still not sure, but I would rather have people at my tournaments be comfortable and feel that it is a legit game.
But I still would like to know people's thought's on this subject.
Yup.
That is very true.
But do you think that if I threw my game at the final table that it would have been too obvious?
And I agree on the home games, I've been to tons where the host has won.
I don't have a prob with hosts winning, because I know that it is anybodys game and that the cards determine who will win (you still have to know how to play them), but is this a legit concern on these people's and my part, or did I through away a potentionaly good poker game in the makings?
stp
But once again, I would like to thank every one who came out, and congrats to every one at the final table. I hope your night was as enjoyable as mine.
Rob
Perhaps but you missed my point, or I should say that I did not make my point clear.
My thought is, if you waited till you got (if you in fact do make it) to the final table you have had time to think about it or as events unfolded before you, you realize that everything is cool and there is no need to dump. In other words you will have had time to come to your senses. Sorry.
Like Dave says: No rake = you can play.
