tipping at casinos in cash game
Hi I was just wondering what the census was on tipping when playing cash at a casino.
I was just at Casino Niagara and there was a guy who wouldn't tip at all I was told all the dealers knew him. I thought it was odd even when he won a big pot no tip. I realize it is not required but just wondering ppls thoughts ...

i do tip. it depends on the pot, the rake and the skills of the dealer
As JohnnieH knows, dealers rely on tips.
In the cash games I've played, almost EVERYBODY tips at least $1 every time they win a pot.
In the tournaments I've played, almost NOBODY else seems to tip even a single $0.01 no matter how much they win.
Poker Tournament Tipping
If you really hate to tip, then online and electronic poker are your best options.
thank you read them both ... and that's what I have been doing.... but might cut it back a bit for big pots and keep it more consistent.
I always try to remind the other winners to tip when collecting/signing for the cash and I buy the extra chips.
Just calculated that for tournies I have been doing 5% ... no wonder I get smiles.
For cash games I tip $1 generally unless the pot is tiny.
I have friends that tip at least $2+ per hand, and friends that refuse to tip in Ontario. I see both sides to it and agree with both.
The ones that tip generously are usually rec players that treat poker as any other table game. They are the ones that believe rake is better than session fee because you only pay when you win, and they believe in good karma.
The ones that refuse to tip in Ontario, are primarily players that play for a living and understand the problem we have here in Ontario. Dealers pool their tips and all the bad ones get tips when we only want to tip the good ones. Also Ontario pays dealers a very high base wage to begin with before tips are factored.
For tournaments Ontario should adopt either 2-3% of prize pools for tips or have a $10-15 addon that goes to the dealers.
There's obviously more to the reasons of dealer tipping but I'm just too lazy to type everything out.
It's funny. We usually get $1/hand regardless of the pot size or table limit, (mostly run 1/2 and 5/5 although we have a few cheapskates who don't tip SFA). Sometimes we get more, but rarely over $5. I did have a $15 tip once for a $1000 pot. I like that guy We commonly get stiffed after a huge pot but I think that's because the winner forgets in their excitement or relief after winning.
For our big tournaments I'd like to see us up the entry fee a bit and take the gratuity right off the top. Over a big tourney weekend we work HARD most of us have +10 hour days, some work 16 hours, and we've been stiffed by some of the top finishers.
I say always tip your dealer!
Most people tip $1/hand=> $20/day=>$100/week=>5000/year.
It's better to once per year give the best dealer $5000 rather than tip $1 per hand.
Or even better,
Once ever 20 years give the best dealer $100,000.
(Adjust according to dealer competence and/or size of breasts, of course.)
I guess once im aware they are getting something id find it hard pressed to tip more, especially in tourney poker unfriendly ontario where its like a challenge to even do so.
Small pots with no flop - $0
Small pots with flop or medium pots - $1
Large pots - $2
Extra large pots - $5
Extra large pots where the dealer saved my bacon on the river - $10+
Any pot won at an OLG Casino - $0
Same sort of rationale I take with Unions.
All that being said, I am tipping when I drag a pot. I have always taken my cue from the table as far as amount.
All the other Ontario casinos are THE BEST FOR PLAYERS, with ZERO gratuity taken out automatically. For example, when we both won first place at Casino Rama, dealers like JohnnieH would not get a single ¢ unless we leave a tip. Fortunately for the Rama dealers, pretty much the only player that tips happens to make it to heads-up the most often too. Coincidence or not?
I also will sometimes tip when I lose a hand. For example, if I am on a king high flush draw and miss but the other player turns over the ace high flush draw, I think this is also worthy of a small tip.
How do the dealers, not being stupid, help the players who tip win?
Scientific proof for karma?
