Vegas July 2014

My buddies and I are headed down from July 1st to the 7th. Planning on hitting up the UFC and doing plenty of gambling. Anyone going down at this time?

Comments

  • May be in the cards for me this year. Usually go in mid June but may have work conflicts so will have to defer it to early July. When is the UFC happening as this may cause hotel prices to go up a bit that weekend?

There's usually a card around Independence Day, so my guess will be on July 5th
  • Tentatively looking at July 2-15 for the 1k One Drop and the main. Might decide to drop the 1k and just play satellites or something.
  • Don't want to really side track the thread but how would you bring like 10k down?

No credit. No credit cards. Like 2nd time to Vegas. I might have to open a TD account - I hear there is a TD in the states.
  • Use the KISS principle - be honest especially if you're bringing at least $10K. Do NOT try to sneak in or divide out your $10K+, or you and your friend(s) can lose all the money & end up in jail! :o

    1) Declare your $10K+ or whatever financial instruments you have at the airport. Leave plenty of time in case you are sent for secondary inspection. I showed my ~U$10K and they did not even bother to count it.

    2) I put most of my cash in the safety deposit box at the hotel. Remember to keep taking enough cash out before you leave your hotel; I wasted a +EV WSOP satellite table since I had to go back to my hotel to pay for the higher buy-ins.

    3) Going back, declare whatever financial instruments you have in every border you cross, including cheques. I asked for my final table cash in a cheque, declared it at the first airport and upon arriving in Canada. I was again asked to go for secondary inspection, signed some papers then was free to go.

I have a TD US Borderless Plan, and I will probably use TD's Cross-Border Banking if I ever run out of highly +EV games in Canada and need to play elsewhere.

  • Part of the enjoyment I find in playing poker, is travelling to play at different casinos around the world. In 2013 I was fortunate enough to play poker in Bahamas, Vegas x 2, Florida and Oklahoma. I wouldn't rule out Vegas and there are plenty of rake-free satellites you can grind to WSOP events with much better structures than the Fallsview $1,500 starting stack donkfests.

Where are these plenty of rake-free satellites to WSOP events? With so many poker people I know, I haven't heard of a single one! :-[

Just bring cash and declare it on the form, both times i brought over 10k and had to spend like 15 minutes at secondary screening but its mostly just sitting there waiting. They didnt count it and just wanted to see it existed.
  • I'm planning to go sometime between June 28 and September 1. Can anybody confirm that the WSOP single table and Mega satellites on May 28 - July 7 will continue to be free of the 30% tax withholding, AND transferable?

If I can't find a caregiver for my kid during our Las Vegas trip, I may join forum members for my second trip to grind the WSOP and other series satellites. Is $583 a good price from Toronto for a non-stop flight (roundtrip per person)?
  • We got ours for $517. We have a 1hr layover on the flight down and then direct on the redeye home.

    Yes, it pays in lamers.

Decent, good is sub 500 but doesn't happen very often

    bring 9500 imo
  • Won't change much. I've never brought >= $10K into the US, but while my other poker companions always get waived through, I'm the only one singled out for secondary inspection - or being fondled by a border guard to check for WMD! :-[

Anybody else going to Vegas anytime in the period between June 27 and July 7? Here's my current plan:
    - Stay at the Rio/Palms/Extended Stay for at least 7 days.
    - Grind anything that does NOT have the highly -EV 30% withholding tax, including Survivor and satellites at DSE III, WSOP, Caesars, etc.
    - Hopefully, declare > $10K winnings on the way back, and be fondled again by Homeland Security!

    Canada has Homeland Security?;)
  • Homeland INsecurity is in the Las Vegas airport, controls Canada, and is spying on you right now!

    You really believe that? ???
  • Ask Edward Snowden, the NSA, and Communications Security Establishment Canada.

  • Has anyone ever done enough grinding to take part in any of the freerolls offered? The last time I qualified I slept through the freeroll because it had been a very late, booze-filled evening. Any info (field size, level of play etc.) would be appreciated.
  • Are you talking about the rare Las Vegas promotions where you get invited to a freeroll tournament if you play enough cash games? The year that I played the WSOP ME, Monte Carlo Resort had a fun freeroll tourney in the weekend for those of us who had played cash during the week. I suppose any freeroll tourney promotion this summer will be better compared to paying for any of the highly -EV tourneys down there.

If you think they are interested in you or I then ........
  • I'm pretty sure that most canadian/u.s agencies are just concerned with border security and anti hacking measures online to protect their data.

    but i could be

    wrong....
