Mohawk Freezeout Today Changed to Re-Entry-Not Announced Until First Player Busts

Played @ Mohawk today in the $100 freezeout. It did not sell out. Halfway through the first level the first player busts. The tournament director comes over and tells us he is going to allow him to buy-in again since the tourney did not sell out!!!????

Talked to the tournament director and he told me they do this sometimes for the regs when the tourney does not sell out?!

After asking a few questions he told me anyone could re-buy for the first level. I told him that by changing the rules and not at least announcing it to everyone at the beginning of the tournament, it gave the players who knew about the re-entry an advantage. I also requested that the official rules be changed to reflect this re-entry format. Also told him that these types of changes to the official rules will keep players away.

A second reg busted just after the the beginning of the second level and was upset when told that the re-entry period was over. I'm sure if I had not spoke up and asked when the re-entry period was over earlier, that that player would have been permitted to re-enter.

Left tilted and did not think to fill out the comment card. Not planning on going back until I know that whatever tournament I sign up for is what I will play. Does anyone have an email address for OLG?

If any other Mohawk tournament players are reading this please fill out a comment card/send email to ensure that the tournament we register for is the tournament we play.

  • That is seriously messed up. An OLG email addy can't be hard to find, just finding the right one that would get attention is the variable.
  • It astounds me how a casino can be so uneducated on how to run a casino event. How could they ever think this is okay?

Reminded me of Brantford earlier today - they did not sell out (had about 47-48 runners) but put out 50 stacks. Blinded the stacks out until taking the unclaimed ones away after the first two levels. The impact would be negligible, but it still created a situation where there were additional chips in play over and above the starting stacks of the players in the tournament.

This is pretty standard if late entry is allowed... At least in AC and Vegas.
  • Usually the only stacks that are getting blinded out are the ones that have already been purchased and assigned that seat.

Late entries are getting a full stack when they sit down. Some casinos let a late entry play right away, while others state they have to wait until they are the big blind

A little more complete answer, thanks Steve.

    This.

Had a similar situation @ Brantford awhile ago. Thought I had found a good addy, but never got a response. Luckily, I was far from the only player to complain that time.

If I find a good addy I will post it here.

For any that are curious-The Similar Brantford Situation:

Ladies freezeout tourney, maybe 6-9 months ago. A new player busts early and innocently asks if she can re-enter and sit at a seat with chips belonging to nobody. Amazingly, she is allowed to do so!

She goes on a tear, knocks player after player out while amassing a huge stack. Many players take notice and are upset.

Despite me having the official rules open on my phone, the tournament director I speak to defends the decision/insists its OK (scariest part of the story)

The director I speak to b4 the start of the next tourney admits the error and apologizes. I am assured it will not happen again.

Personally, I'm glad she went on that tear. Had she just got knocked out again early, players may not have known or cared, and not complained or taken the time to escalate their complaints.

Don't know if she ended up cashing.
  • Be sure to fill out the green feedback form at ANY OLG slots location (will be sent to Mohawk/Brantford) and follow up later, such as on https://secure.olg.ca/lottery_contact.jsp.

+1. I noticed that Brantford doesn't follow TDA Rules, such as players registering late should be sold FULL stacks (Rule #7). There should not be any unsold stacks in play.

Instead of just whining amongst ourselves, it is important to let the casino know so they will have a chance to improve for all future games, just like I did by appealing to Matt Savage and the WPT for all future WPT Fallsview events. As great as I have found the casino games since I went back to playing live, there will be some exciting announcements this year :-X so it's important for the players to help the casinos keep improving.

I believe this one is correct:

maybe they took lessons from WEG, who has screwed up harness racing there.......afterall Mohawk is a horse track, and has been for 45 years, but you poker players knew that right?^-^

Just want to clarify - Steve's response is very different from your response. It is not standard procedure in Vegas/AC to put out unsold stacks to be blinded and then pull the remaining chips of those stacks out when they do not get purchased through late reg - this is what Brantford did.

Steve's explanation is totally fine. That is the way late reg should work. At any given time, the chip pool should be (Number of Runners * Starting Stack). Blinding out imaginary stacks gives a minor advantage to those who were in better position versus those blank stacks.

That being said, what Brantford did, while very wrong, would have little or no impact on the tournament result. It just bugs me.
  • With WPT FARCEview over until next year, I wanted to play the $150+$10 MTT at Mohawk this month, but OLG forgot to put it on the schedule. :( I phoned Mohawk, and the MTT actually ran today and sold out early! The smart supervisor wants to have $160 MTTs every Saturday, and a monthly $220+$10, but who knows if or when his OLG managers will ever approve that.
