Danny in TO

I just got an email from the red hot poker tour - I have played in their game at Philthy Mcnasty's on Eglington in Toronto - and they are advertising Daniel's participation next Wed at the Madison Pub.

I think I will get there early and have a beer or two (game starts at 7) so I can have a free shot at the champ. I expect there to be a HUGE line up so I shall get there about 5 or 5:30. I will totally pull the move ed norton put on Johnny Chan in the movie - I think it would be a great time for all Toronto (and psuedo-local) forumites to come out en masse and challenge for the championship.

I would compare that to getting Tiger to play in the company golf game.

We could have side action - kinda a forum bounty on DN's head and among each other. $2 per forum elimination (you pay the guy/gal who knocks you out) and everyone participating puts $5 in the pot for anyone who takes out DN. If no one does, it becomes the beer fund.

Any takers?

  • where can i get info on this red hot poker tour.

if i can get my self free in time, i'll definitiely make a trip down to the madi for this tourney (it is a tourney right)
  • Wow, sober at the Maddy?.... I dont ever remember that... I think I may need to take Wednesday off
    and head down....
    anyone from KW wanna come?
  • ed norton put on Johnny Chan

Well, without tring to sound like a total loser, unless there was another movie with Ed Norton and Johnny Chan I think you have the wrong Rounder my friend. ;-)
  • ok - so it was Matt Damon. You think you're just so smart.

It's a tourney - albeit with a terrible structure, but it's free and sort of fun (lots of bingo).

http://www.redhotpokertour.com I believe is the site, but do a quick search if this isn't it. I still want some side action though.
  • I think it was the Worm who really put the move on Johnny, but Mikey just gets all the credit.

If you look carefully at that scene on the DVD on slow-mo, you can catch one or two frames (but it's pretty unclear) where you can see Worm in the background signalling Mikey from the Chinese noodle house that Chan also has no hand.

The reality is that Mikey never did "outplay the guy". It was just the typical Worm-Mikey McD team play, no more or less artfully crafted than the "he's my visiting boyfriend" scam.

  • Is the pub 21+?

Also, is it a free tourney or buyin? Hmmm Negreanu playing a FREEROLl for braggin rights....i see him going all in off the bat lol!
  • Scotty, thanks for the support - I knew SOMEONE else had seen those things - I wasn't going crazy after all.

Tilter, The maddy is 19+ - simply a bar. Remember, we're not in the US ...

The Red Hot site shows the Madison on Tuesday. It this a special event? I know that Daniels site states Wednesday.
  • Member News -- On Wednesday, March 16 at the Madison Ave. Pub - we will have
a very special guest visiting, 2004 Poker Player of the Year, and Canada's
    own, Daniel Negreanu.

There is an article coming out in the Saturday Star that quotes several Red
Hot Poker Tour members, and also has a few pictures from Monday (at Philthy
McNasty's) in Toronto. The article will also be mentioning Daniel's visit
to the Tour, so you can imagine how many players/fans will show up.

To give our regular members an advantage, we are offering you a chance to
win a reserved seat on Wednesday, March 16. The final two tables (sixteen
players) from each of the two tournaments at the Madison on Tuesday, March
15 (the upstairs and the downstairs tournaments), will have a seat held for
    them up to 6:15 PM.

FAN 590 - Starting Friday, March 11 - the Fan 590 will be running ads
promoting the Red Hot Poker Tour. The FAN has come on as a partner, and
will be at the Tournament of Champions and also plans to interview the
    winner.

Finally, March 17 at Peel Pub is cancelled due to St. Patrick's day.
Apparently, green beer and green felt don't go so well together.

    Shuffle up and Deal!

  • Just so you know, they are giving out small cards with numbers on them now.

The registration on Thursday, at Peel Pub started at 6pm. I got there at 6:22pm and I didn't get a card and had go home. Thursday was full !

Basically; come 15 minutes prior to 6pm.

Maybe Thursday night @ Peel Pub is a popular venue, I'm not sure.
  • Wow, this seems fun. About how many are allowed to play?

Also, where do I line up to get a ticket, I will probably show up @ 5-530 to ensure a spot in becoming the #1 Poker player by eliminating DN! MWAHAHAHAAHAH, especially by playing back at him with his favourite hand t-7
  • they usually have 100 players or so, with alternates (maybe another 20 people).

I really suggest, if they are holding seats in reserve for Wed, that people get there WELL in advance - no later than 5:30. I went to the monday game a few weeks ago and they were 'full' by 6:00. People lined up to get on the waiting list at that point.
  • IC. Where does the line usually begin? And can you get like a ticket at like 5pm? or do u have to line up to get a ticket for 6pm by 5pm.
  • Ok, is there any reason to drive in from KW?

It looks like it is a crapshoot to get a seat. If we got there by 5:30 are we almost garaunteed a seat? or is it a 1-20 shot?
  • If you are coming from KW, come for 5pm, just to be sure ( I'm guessing ).
  • I couldn't say for sure - I am local, so it's no big deal for me. I am not sure it's worth an hour drive in to wait in line for a seat (maybe).

I think the odds of a seat if you are there before 5:30 are better than one in 20, but again, Scotty's disclaimer applies here: I am not a lawyer. Actually it doesn't apply at all. But Scotty is smart and if you can quote him, you are smart by extension, right?
  • Thanks for this tip (and the white envelope) yesterday Mr. Yorkpoker!

    I'll be there verrrry early.
  • Always a pleasure. Bring the envelope and I will let you buy me a burger and a beer. :)

    Cheers.

I hope to see many forumites there.
  • I will certainly be there. Lets hope DN plays this tourney somewhat seriously, I know I will.
  • Gah, I have a hockey playoff game tomorow night:(
  • I just heard that DN is going to host a freeroll at the Paradise banquet hall at 3:30 today. I believe that's up around Jane and 7 for anoyone in the area. I know nothing more about it, but I figured I would mention.

If only we could get more info. Guess I have to settle for playing DN tomorrow.
  • Did anyone here go? How'd you do?
  • I went, it was packed @ like 515 already. So I headed home (1 minute walk :) ) and came back @ 7. Got a pic with Danny and a graph, then me and my buddy had planned for a night of poker, so we headed off to Rama for a 11pm-7am session. 8 hours, $285 (could have been more, but I got pushed off pots) @ 2-5.
  • I was there along with a couple of other forum members. I'll let them post.

I recall my high hand last night was 66. I didn't do as well as the Tuesday qualifier. Our table was tight. When someone finally busted off our bench we had a spot for Daniel. He only played 2 hands with us. The first hand, he looked down the table at me (I quickly looked at my chips) and he wisely folded.
He went allin 2nd hand and I believe it was 44 beating his A10 with a 4 on board.

A fun night with decent media coverage. Since Mr. Negreanu was nice enough to appear and play, you can read of his Toronto experience here:

I received an email for this game but not much info was included. Here is their website. http://www.internationalpokertours.com
It looks like the winner from each of their games(5 of week?) plays a final game and the winner of that games goes to a wpt game somewhere..
I sent them an email for some detail but did not receive a reply. How can it be free at a banquet hall? The banquet hall needs to get paid by someone.
Did anyone from here go? Please enlighten me if so.

I had wanted to go check out this game at the Madison as well but again could not figure out what the point was. I would have liked to go and play in a game with DN there but I only have so much time for poker unfortunately. I find my poker time is better invested in games that payout something.
Is there a point to the http://www.redhotpokertour.com other than bragging rights?

The top 80 players from this "tour" then play a final tournament to decide who the best is..
The Red Hot Poker Tour was created to give amateur poker players an opportunity to experience a real tournament and go head-to-head in a bid to be poker champion. It’s a test of your skills and nerve, not your bankroll, as there is no entry fee, and no currency involved - just the real bragging rights that come with being a local poker legend.
    Local poker legend??

Someone please hesplain this to me.
  • I recall hearing the winner of the redhotpokertour (either most points and/or winner of their tournament of champions) will win a sitdown with Daniel.
