should i coach basketball at my old highschool?

today i had an old friend show up to my class to offer me the chance to coach the grade 9 boys basketball team at my old high school. i've always loved coaching and i have wanted to do it in the past. however, i have never coached high school before (only some elementary school basketball and volleyball), so i'm a little worried that i may be out of my league. also, i literally have zero friends who live in the city who know anything about basketball, so having an assistant coach may not be possible. doing it alone seems very overwhelming.

it'll be a big commitment as we will have 2 games a week plus at least 2 practices a week. i can't decide what to do as i've always loved coaching and coaching high school has been a little dream of mine for a long time. (i was actually turned down in the past when i asked previous coaches if i could help assist them. i was told that they already had to turn down others who offered to help as well.)

idk, i'm just stressing out trying to decide what to do. i just thought i'd vent here. just asked today but gotta make a decision by tomorrow...:-\

  • As long as it doesn't take away from your poker time, I say go for it. :D

Seriously, volunteering is a good thing. Although it will be hard work, it will be very satisfying to mould a team into your image. Hell, you might even win something, which would be cool.
  • I say go for it, and poker be damned. When my daughter started to play soccer, I started out as her Coach. Best feeling in the world was being able to see those faces when they won the whole League one year. It is a nice feeling to be able to give that sense of accomplishment to some kids, even if only in a small way.
  • You don't even have to win a championship to see the faces of accomplishment. A great pass, fantastic defense, showing up early for all the practices. These are what should be celebrated, its the hard work between games that will be the most rewarding.
  • Good luck if you decide to do it. I coached high school for a couple of years. Be aware that grade 9's don't value "commitment" as much as you do. They'll quit for various reasons throughout the season and not show up for games based on prior commitments like "i was busy". Having said that it was a fun time. Be sure to have an assistant to work with who can deal with school issues. You shouldn't be expected to deal with students who don't show up to class but want to play etc.
