Scarborough Sharks club review

I decided to look up this local club last night.

It has been open about 3weeks located near the Scarborough town centre in a convinient location. The club has room for 4 tables and a pool table in the front. The tables are very nice and have speed cloths.

The tournament I played was a rebuy and addon(not my favorite) but it was well run and they have two wall mounted screens so everyone has a good view of the blind levels. It was also self dealt . My ony comment is please always start the game on time. By starting it at time posted you will force the players to be there on time. The game started 30 min late.

Over all they need some tweeking of their structures but it was a good, clean and smoke free place to play.

Thank-you very much for the review, we appreciate everyone's feedback so that we may improve in any deficiencies that we have, the late start is an issue and we are correcting the issue, all game will start at the announced time and players that arrive late shall be seated at the next big blind position.

The blind structures are still being tweaked on a daily basis as we get feedback from our members and shortly we can have the best structures in place for all of our games.

Again, Thank-you very much for the review and hope to see you back shortly.

  • I believe being smoke free is a big advantage.
  • Question
Are smokers allowed to smoke in the same room as the tournament players for either club?

We are a smoke free, non-alcoholic club, all of the players that do smoke must do so outside, with only the exception of bad weather, which in that case we ask all present members if it is agreeable to all, if the smokers could stand at the front door (door open) to smoke. Please note: that the club has a separate poker room with a closed door to keep the actual playing room clean and clear.
  • How many players on average? Weekday vs weekend.
    Thx.
  • Question

Yes I have been there many times. What would you like to know about it?:D
  • I reviewed Aces too...although I was wrong about the no rake.

Named it wrong, other than the smoke I would return anytime.

The above is a link to their first post with some of the info you're asking about.

I believe they don't post their address, but it would be provided via pm or email.

THE TORONTO ACES POKER CLUB has been non smoking for last 2 months since SEPT 1st 2013
  • Despite wildbill's warning, it continues to be difficult to "crack the code" of exactly how much the four underground clubs advertising in the forum are taking away from a player's buy-in, rebuys and add-on. Sharks seems to take extra rake from both the rebuys ($10) and add-on (50%), so if a player pays for one rebuy and one $20 add-on for the upcoming Fallsview satellite, it becomes
    ($10 buy-in rake + $10 rebuy rake + $10 add-on rake) / ($130 including bounty + $110 rebuy + $20 add-on)
    = 11.5% rake.

To compare with YRPL, when a player buys in for $100 and rebuys for $60, only $75 goes to that night's prize pool, so the "rake" from the player's point of view is 53% (85/160)! :o

PSA: Play a rebuy tournament only when 100% of the rebuys and add-ons goes to that game's prize pool, which is the case in the THOUSANDS of rebuy tourneys I've played in casinos and online. If you want to play in a club like I do, look for a tourney where all the rake comes from your initial buy-in.

Does Toronto Aces Poker Club, Poker Place & other undergrounds also make the mistake of taking extra rake from the rebuys and add-on?

  • YRPL takes nothing from the re-buys we just save them for the Free-Roll Championship that is 100% funded by the re-buys.

I have played at all of the above mentioned clubs, I have enjoyed all of the clubs personally, I have no problems with paying a few dollars to any club that is offering a good game and a pleasant atmosphere, I also must say that any poker player in my opinion that wants to have a good time and good game, be it at a casino or club will have to pay for some kind of expenses(travelling, food, entry and many other fees) in one way or another, therefore you must personally make your decisions according to what you are looking for and are willing to do, and as a player that enjoys the game so much, I am perfectly willing to do so. and I completely understand that in order for me to play in any one of the larger scale games, I must either pay the full entry (which could be in the thousands of dollars) for such a tournament or try my luck and hopefully skills to win a seat.

I have played in a few of Rocky's tournaments thus far and I have very much enjoyed each and every one of them, I won 1st place in one of them as well, I also fully understand that as a player that I must protect my position in order to play in the years final, either way I would and will continue to play in Rocky's tournaments, I very much enjoy them & all of the members, I am very thankful to be part of these tournaments, and this goes for all of the rest of the clubs.

I have played in 2 tournaments at The Poker Place since there opening thus far and they were great games, friendly and well run, clean and well planned events to which I have a great chance to play a Major event seat, (I get the chance to play in any game on various nights and have a good chance of winning an Event seat, I happily will play these games, if I play the 6-49 lottery(which I have been playing for over 25 years) and I have still not won a Million dollars, so should I stop playing the lottery now that they have increased the cost to $3.00 a ticket or continue and try to win, I choose to continue to try, thus I still pay my $3.00 per ticket. Is this that different? not really).

I have played in the past at The Aces Poker Club and would gladly return to play again.

I think that the main objective here is getting out of focus, all of the clubs must under any and all circumstances collect in one fashion or another in order to function and keep a great group of players in the process of having a good time and a great poker game. Now, I agree that trying to keep the costs down is a part of this process. Again, if the clubs want to stay open, offer great food, drinks and snacks and more... that most players do comprehend this and are willing to help support the clubs they enjoy.

    Thank-you
    John P
