-Tips are paid in STRAIGHT-CASH-HOMEY at the end of the night. If you leave before closing, your tips for that night are put aside for you. I was handed a plastic bag with $42 from my short shift on Friday and $113 for last night. Not too shabby!
Wow, I'm surprised at both the amount and the speed of the cash tips. I thought that there would be a lot of procedures to be followed for the gaming and tax regulations. It also wouldn't be good for somebody with gambling or other vices to be handed cash every night after not being able to gamble all day!

I was also surprised that we get the tips once the casino is closed. Not complaining though ;) As for the amount, I'm sure most of it comes from poker. I think I only earned $20 in Blackjack tips for the tip pool. It seems like every time a player puts me in the game, I bust them.

Don't worry about me blowing it. These tips are part of my income, so they get spent on family stuff. Today I brought some groceries, gas and some beer (OK that's for me) and I'm almost out of cash already. Easy come, easy go!

-Dealers get many, many breaks. Last night I was dealing for 40 minutes, then taking 20 off. On Friday it was 30 and 30.

PAID breaks too - that summer I dealt I read through so many books because of the amount of breaks that we got.
  • +1. I was able to read a couple of poker books and it paid off with big casino wins!

So does this get reported as income?:D

-This goes without saying, but players really aren't happy when the dealer hits on 16 and pops a 5. This happened several times last night :D

    - A few poker players constantly on life tilt, personally blaming you for dealing his losing hand

Thought about this again on Saturday night.

A couple at the BJ table were running fairly hot until I started dealing. Naturally I coolered them and they went to the other table in a huff. I finished my run at that table, I had a break then tapped into the table where they had moved. As soon as they saw me coming they picked up their chips and moved tables again! I didn't take it personally :)

I'm starting to really get comfortable at with dealing. Almost every players is very nice and tip quite well when they have the #rungood flowing.

Awhile ago I had a "famous" person at my table with some friends and they were D-R-U-N-K. It was kinda funny, and they did tip fairly well. Always a nice thing! I won't publicly say who, but if you want to know, PM me.

Also, we are told that poker dealer training starts at the end of November. Can't wait!

I said famous, not infamous :D

    No, it wasn't.

He would only be allowed in if he brought Avril Lavigne with him!
  • A Canadian cook with the last name Smith?
  • I wish! (Although I've met him a few times already!
  • Great read! Congrats on the Job!
  • I've spent 3 hours total on the tables tonight and dealt the casino 13 Blackjacks. Not very many tips so far :D

I've also heard legends of this hand one of our dealers gave himself this past summer:

    A-A-3-2-5-A-3-6.

    Pretty sick shit!

Do the dealers hit on soft 17?
  • Do the dealers hit on soft 17?

    Yep.
  • So, an update, if you care.

I still love the job. We had several dealers quit over the summer, so now I usually get 4 shifts a week which is nice.

Most of the players are friendly and kind, some are truly hilarious and make the shift fly by. Although Blondefish was right in saying there are a few players on life tilt who continually lose and blame us. Twice now I've almost been hit in the face by players "mucking" his cards. I wish their aim was better, then they would get a 6 month ban.

In my 1.5 year dealing I've seen some interesting stuff. A couple of fights at the table. A guy passed out on the casino floor. Players run $200 at BlackJack into $4K than lose it all. Shipped a $5K pot in Poker to the player who had K5 in the hole. One guy lost all his money playing BlackJack including his daily ATM withdrawal limit. He brought $1000 of scratch tickets on his credit card and 'won' maybe $300, which he proceeded to give back on the BJ table.

A casino can be a very fun place to work, but at times a very, very sad place also.
  • How much of your time is dealing BJ vs poker. When will they get craps? :)

John did mention poker dealer training did start late November. I didn't know he'd started.

I love these updates John. I care. Keep 'em coming son!

Depends on the number of tables running. Our usual rotation is 2 Blackjack tables on 1 Poker table, unless it's a Tuesday or Friday when we have a tournament running.

We try to switch games every time we go back to the floor, but sometimes a table opening or closing screws up where you are supposed to be going next.

Most dealers prefer to deal poker because they like the game better, but I don't really care. Blackjack is kinda nice because it's mindless. I find myself on autopilot most of the time, especially if the players are boring.

Since the casino is tiny, (you could roll a bowling ball from one side to the other) there is no plan to get craps, but rumour has it we will be getting Let It Ride in the spring.

  • Glad to see you still enjoy it, John . . . love the updates here and elsewhere. With Acid Joe heading East, it seems that the Forum might be migrating oh so slowly.
