Where the hell are y'all?

Summer Super Stack at Deerfoot Inn in Calgary, formerly the COPC is in full effect. So far all my headliners are busting just short of spectacular and it's pissing me off!

Nav just finished 4th in $550 HU for $3300. 54 runners.

Ontario guy shipped triple chance for 10k after defeating 52 runners. You know him? He looks part Asian and about 22.

Funny, I asked this very question. 160 last year, 120 not unrealistic at all, though Rob feels 160 better bet. I think the mega is a great event. Been kicking it back and forth...Bren will likely grind cash (short stack 2/5) later in week to try to get in ME.

Traditionally, cash games are full of action during these, plenty of tables tonight.

Tomorrow is a 1 day, correct? Any idea how long it runs? I'm assuming at least 14 hours.
  • Yeah, gonna be an all nighter, even with noon start. Lmk if you play. Maybe pop down. Too hard to juggle this one around work & kids. Weekend warriors I guess
  • Looking at the structure it's probably going to be at least 18h+ which probably won't work for me since I start work the next day...but I'm still considering it:)

Unfortunately, it seems that only a small percentage of members still plays poker in their area casinos. Every single poker tournament I've played at Casino Rama, Mohawk (& recently at Brantford) have sold out, and I recognize a lot of faces from all my old poker circles > 4 years ago (including home games, underground, casino gamblers, and even bar leagues), but not forumers. ???

I'm sure you've already calculated the rake, but for those who haven't, it's 16% for this $380 + $10 + $10 + $50 tourney. Not as good as Ontario, but still much more +EV compared to Seneca, California (extra 7% withholding rape) or anywhere in the US.

You probably don't see many forumers at the Ontario tournies since they are so inconveniently located. Try adding your travel time and gas $$ into your rake calculations and you can then understand why it is so much better to play in AB. Take your hourly live winrate and use that as your travel time factor.

It's not a good rake, but I think a small part goes to AB charities (2.5%?) (so I wouldn't even consider that part rake if it ACTUALLY goes to charity...anyone have info on this?) and I only play tournies for fun as considering them a source of long term profit given the few I play a year would be silly given the extremely high variance in mtts. So, I don't much care about an extra few % in rake if the field size and structure are decent.

FWIW, I would rather pay a bit more in rake for double the field size of Ontario rooms. It would be nice to see them stop capping games at 80 players which is terrible IMO. I'm not saying this is the case for this series at Deerfoot (anyone know the #s they've been getting?), but I knwo even the monthly deepstacks at YH in YEG get 2 days of approx 100 entries, which is much more preferable to capping at 80.

As long as the rooms have good, consistent cash games with a reasonable rake I am willing to pay a few dollars more for the occasional tournament.

That being said, I don't know if I can play today given that I don't see this taking <18 hours...so my schedule may not allow it.

I believe it goes to the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC), i.e., general government revenues. The AGLC automatically gets a lot of revenue already from the casinos, but this seems to be an extra tax on those who play a tournament. Ontario and other provincial governments also eventually redistribute a PORTION of their gambooling revenues (aka "stupidity tax") to charities, but they do not have this extra 2.5% tournament tax.

Anyway, good luck to GTA Poker, jontm's "better half" and anybody else playing the remaining Deerfoot events. Based on Gottaget's analysis, the Deerfoot events are much more +EV than the Rio Daily so-called "Deep Stacks".

Have all the events been freezeout format with no re-entry? The re-entry format got the most votes for the final "Players Choice" Event #8. As FTP players painfully know, this is actually the worst format for most players as you will have to repay the full ~15% rake again to the casino, AGLC and staff. I loved the old rebuy/add-on format at Brantford since a lot of money is added to the players' prize pool with ZERO rake. Just like when everybody at a Fallsview, Venetian or Rio table would hand me their cash for a last-longer or bubble boy prize, it is a no-brainer to try to add money with no rake as opposed to paying full rake again.
