Summer Poker Adventures Part 2

So we drag our asses to the airport and make it to Vegas. We are staying at Harrah's. We drop our stuff with the bellhop since our rooms weren't ready and then hit the Toby Kieth's for drinks and lunch. 3 of us go to bet the horses and the rest go play cards. After the afternoon races we head to the Quad to play poker there. I had a good buzz on but played well until my flopped top two pair lost to a flopped set. Ended down $150.
The next day I spent the afternoon in the racebook and met the other 3 guys who were scheduled to fly in. To our surprise another one of our buddies just showed at the racebook up unannounced to join in the fun. Played at the Flamingo that night 1-2 NL and bought in for $200. I played 3 hands in the first 3 hours: KK from early position I raised to 9 and got 6 callers. An ace on the flop killed my hand. AQs from mid-position won me a small pot and pocket AA in the BB won me exactly 1 dollar since it was folded around to me! (in over 45 hours of poker that I played on this trip that was the only time I got pocket aces:-[ After that I played for another couple of hours and booked a small profit of $50.
The next day another buddy flew in from Winnipeg which was kind of cool. I spent the day at the racebook and played poker at the Flamingo and Harrahs. No hands of note but lost $200. The best thing was my buddy from Winnipeg got up in the middle of the night when he couldn't sleep and played the $1 slots and hit for $4500.
The next day we planned on going downtown. Some of the group came while others stayed and played on the strip. A bunch of the guys had never been downtown. We hit the Heart Attack Grill for lunch which was awesome! Check it out next time you go downtown. We played at the Golden Nugget and I lost another $50. My card dead streak continues. We hit Binion's Steak House for a meal. The slot winner threw in $500 for the meal so it was a great dinner and cost me about $30!
The next day we spent at the racebook until it was time for 3 of us to head to MGM for the UFC Weidman vs Silva. A great fight card and the most sober I've ever been at a UFC event! Met Cub Swanson after his fight and chatted with him over a hotdog and beer. A down-to-Earth great guy. After that we headed to Bally's to play poker. My cooler continued and I lost another $100.
Sunday we spent at the racebook and then played at the Flamingo. I ended up $160 which was a small morale boost that I still know how to play this game:) Monday was our last day and I proceeded to lost the $160 I had won earlier when I got 3 outered on the river and then ran QQ into AA. My last 3 trips to Vegas I have come home with more than what I went with so I guess the swing was inevitable. Great trip though and can't wait to do it again!

  • Review Binion's Steakhouse please.
  • We were a party of 9. We tried to walk in at around 7:30 but there was no room for us but they were able to fit us in at 9pm. The atmosphere was nice (actually a little dark for my liking) and the service was quick and efficient. I had a salad appetizer and went with a great steak for my main. A couple of the guys went with surf and turf, another went with filet mignon. My one buddy had this MONSTROUS prime rib that was literally almost 4 inches thick (he also had chowed down a triple burger at the Heart Attack Grill earlier in the day). I can't recall what the others had but each of us was stuffed by the generous portions. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Sounds amazing. I'm checking it out next time, for sure. Also intrigued by the HAG.

Was there a reality show episode on the running of this place?
  • My buddy (the big eater) had seen it on Man vs. Food I believe. I'm not sure about the behind the scenes show though.
  • Yeah this one.

All it really does is highlight how sad, pathetic and trashy downtown casinos are.
