High card in hand

Why does when a player gets flush with Ace on the table and the second player also has a flush but the one with the higher card in hand gets the pot. Doesn't the ace count for something? Same with pairs.. when two players get pairs the one with the second card in hand that is higher gets the pot. Why is this?

    in case this is a serious question : poker is a 5 card hand, so one has Qd Jd and the other has Kd Td on a board of Ad 3d 7d 6c Ts

    So the hands are Ad Qd Jd 7d 3d

    the other is Ad Kd Td 7d 3d

    as you can see A-K is higher than A-Q so A K would win
