Montreal Casino bad beat jackpot downgraded

Looks like the Montreal Casino recently changed their bad beat jackpot (BBJ). You used to be able to trigger the progressive (increasing) jackpot with (AA)AJJ or better. Now they've split the BBJ into 2 tiers - the large progressive jackpot can only be won by (88)88 or better, while the old (AA)AJJ or better gets a fixed jackpot of $10,000.

I don't have the facts, but my gut tells me that most of their previous BBJ winners probably triggered with at least one hand having low quads (like 3333 vs. TTTT), which no longer qualifies for the progressive jackpot. So it seems like the progressive jackpot will grow and grow, while people start to win a BBJ of $10,000 split amongst the entire table rather than possibly $100,000+. Kind of disappointing, no?

  • Most poker players hate bad beat jackpots.

The more common reason for liking bad beat jackpots seem to be, "Stupid people like them!"
  • Bad beat jackpots are just extra rake.

Personally, I would have to disagree with this

yup........Yellowhead poker room in Edmonton put in this year a separate rake for 'tourney bad beat'......just terrible.....think it's an extra $5 for every tourney
  • Do the Alberta casinos actually rip you off with an extra rake on a stooopid tournament bad beat?? The daily tournaments look almost as bad as Seneca with so many additional fees, e.g.,
    $100 (buy-in) + $10 (registration fee) + $5 (tournament bad beat) + optional $5 (for bonus chips).
I'm shocked that Ontario now has better-value regular tournaments at OLG Slots, Brantford and Rama.

Just like many players will never understand how terrible high rake is, those same players don't understand the stupidity of paying for a bad beat jackpot. Fallsview & Casino Niagara have profited over $100,000 from the 10% rake of BBJ they have taken from players. One lucky player has won the BBJ top prize THREE times for a total of ~$100,000! :o The regs have lost thousands of dollars in BBJ by playing in Niagara Falls and even the best players have a lower win rate than this one guy only due to pure luck!

  • I liked that megabeat Jackpot in Vegas.

Would have liked it even more had I won some of it.
  • The GBH bigger bad beat jackpot is almost 400k. You have to lose with a minimum of quad 8's.
