Advice on Re-buy MTT

Hi Everyone,

I'll be playing a SCOOP event on Stars tomorrow, it's a $27 buy-in but I was able to satellite in :)

Anyway, it's got a [1R,1A] structure with 15 minute blinds and 3000 starting chips...so I was hoping to get some advice on preferred playing styles / optimal strategies.

I know there must be a huge variety of opinions but just wanted to get some ideas from people here.

I've played in mtt's before and done ok with a few cashes (sorry, no exact numbers yet) but this is the first time I'll be playing a big one like this...thanks in advance!

  • If you think that you are one of the top ~30% of players that are +EV in this event, then it's +EV to rebuy before the first hand and add-on. This rebuy/add-on with no extra rake is a much better format for most players than the multiple-rake multiple-entry format. If one is worse than average and gets stacked off well before the add-on period, it's -EV to rebuy.

Optimal or GTO play involves a lot of raising light, 3/4/5-betting light and not being afraid to go all-in. A lot of MTT players have the mistaken belief that they have a big edge and should bypass small +EV spots in an MTT. Obviously, recognizing the right situations to execute the higher EV lines is a lot easier said than done. When I'm multi-tabling, I miss a lot of maximally exploitative and optimal plays.

If Vekked, betrthanphil or other winning online MTT reg disagrees with any of the above, please post.
  • i've heard people argue that you shouldn't use the 1 rebuy right away. instead you should try and play it out without it and just keep it back in case you take a bad beat or something. personally, i don't know if i like that strategy because i feel that having the bigger stack right away is more profitable for a couple reasons: 1) not everyone rebuys right away so having a bigger stack to push around small stacks right away is beneficial, and 2) having a bigger stack to start with means i can win an even bigger pot - for example, let's say we stay with our original 3000 and we get AA vs KK early. the most we can win is 6000 which is good. however, if we have that same scenario where we're holding 6000 we have the potential to come away with 12000 chips early on. this can greatly effect the rest of the tournament for us as having a big stack early in a slow blind tournament is a big advantage. therefore, why not take all our bullets to the fight as opposed to half of them?

as far as the add on, i really can't see a reason to not use it. maybe if we're a huge chip leader or if we're well above average stack (after the add on period that is). or maybe if we're playing above our heads and taking a shot at a bigger buy in. even in those situations i'd probably still take the add on though.

I add-on > 95% of the time, but there are several situations where an add-on would be -EV for me.
maybe if we're a huge chip leader or if we're well above average stack (after the add on period that is).
Those are NOT the situations. If anybody else adds on, I will usually add-on to my chip lead in an MTT.
or maybe if we're playing above our heads and taking a shot at a bigger buy in. even in those situations i'd probably still take the add on though.
If only the fish got eliminated and I am now worse than average against the better sharks remaining, and the high cost of the add-on chips is not enough to give me a competitive stack, this will be one of the -EV situations where I won't add-on.

I am not a tourney expert but I get the impression that you are taking a shot.

    Don't play timid.
    Don't play to survive.
Give yourself the best chance to take it down.
Win one of the top 3 spots.

If you think you will play worse than your opponents, read "Kill Phil" and use that strategy.

Would like to see this elaborated upon./

My guess is that its structure dependent.

IE, if the AO gives you an additional 5BB, whats the point.
  • Here are other exceptions I would not add-on:

    1) If the R/A tourney happens to have an overlay, it is in everybody's interest to minimize R/A. For example, when there was one table left at the end of the rebuy period, all the players agreed not to add-on.

    2) In an R/A multiple-seat satellite when I have enough chips or in a good relative chip position to win one of the seats.

    3) I won an entry to a high buy-in R/A MTT that I would not normally buy into, and I felt the remaining players in my table were too good for me to pay the high cost of the add-on.

    4) If the add-on does not increase the prize pool. For example, some did not pay for the additional chips at the WPT Celebrity Invitational.

    5) If nobody else adds on for some reason, I would not either.

Actually, I would usually AO in this situation. If most players AO for the 5 BB and I did not think that I was below average against the remaining field, then I would AO to remain competitive.
  • so blondefish, let's say after the rebuy period, you accumulated 100,000 chips and second place (after adding on) had 50,000. you still see a reason to perform the add on? mathematically it just seems like those 3000 chips would be practically insignificant even if ever single player left in the tournament added on. obviously this doesn't happen often but like i said, if i had a huge lead, what's the difference of adding like 2% to my stack when i'm already 50% more than 2nd?

EDIT: i also don't quite understand why it would matter if no one else performed the rebuy. why would that change your mind? you didn't give a reason and i can't think of one at all.
  • Edit: After taking a closer look at different scenarios, I realize now that the correct answer as usual is - IT DEPENDS! I've stopped playing online for now, but when I play R/A MTTs again, I will analyze my rebuy/add-on decision for each specific case.

Which reminds me - why aren't there any more live R/A tournaments in Ontario casinos? :'( I remember the R/A tournaments at OLG Casino Brantford used to sell out in the good ol' days, attracting both sickos and players who understood that a R/A format greatly lowers the rake and makes them more profitable.
