  • In holdem, always use the best 5 card combination from your hole cards and the board cards.

    Example 1:

    Player 1 has a full house 888KK
Player 2 has two pair KKQQ8

    Player 1 wins

    Example 2:

Player 1 has a straight AKQJT
Player 2 has two pair KK44A

    Player 1 wins

The "why" is because of the ranking of poker hands. See (for example)

    http://www.math.sfu.ca/~alspach/comp18/

to see which hands beat which.

  • OIC :D

    thanks for the link :D

i thought it was your Hole Cards plus 3 of the 5 Board cards that makes the best hand :(

why would i think that? :?:

    why would i think that?

Possibly because this *is* the rule in Omaha.

  • Confused,

Those are good questions, I have spoken to a number of people that dont play poker that much and that is a very common misconception, that it is your hole cards plus 3 of the 5 board cards. I have actually had people 'argue' with me that the game is played that way and not the way it IS played.

  • Another common misconception related to this is that a lot of beginning players have the notion that your second hole card *must* play in your hand because of the idea of kickers.

For example, you'll sometimes see some confusion come up when you get A4 against A2 and the board is:

    AQ986

Both players have the 5 cartd hand: AAQ98. This is a split pot, even thought the A4 often thinks they should win the whole pot.

On the flip side of this, I have seen *many* dealers in casinos make the mistake of pushing the whole pot to the A4 only in this sort of situation, so pay attention and protect your hand in situations where you think you may be entitled to a portion of the pot. Also, always table (which means show) your hand at the end of the hand if you think you might actually split (or win) the pot. I've seen players in this situation *muck* the A2 when they see the other player's A4. They should have shown down the A2 and scooped half of the pot.
