Are headphones -eg- Music bad etiquette?

Played in a tourney that over 9 hours long this weekend.

I have to say I played a great tourney, I only made one real bad mistake; I came up against quads and thought he might have it for a second but convinced myself we were splitting on a fullhouse.

The biggest thing I know helped me was my mp3 player. I was able to coast through the bad cards (folded 19 times straight including my BB's) and kept focused while I had tunes in the background. I had them low enough so that I could hear the table and help out the dealers when some questions came up -- when I wasn't in a hand twice I had to point out who won the hand - two pair vs str, the dealer didn't see the str etc.

I didn't hold up the game at all, but I know it helped me tremendously. I frequently find myself bored and end up playing dumb cards, or getting into conversations cause I'm bored and I end up ego playing. So I was able to avoid alot of those traps because I had 'filler"

I would have NO problem wearing these at a Casino, (I'm paying a rake - I listen to MY music - if I hold up play warn me and twice kick me out) - but what about the other private events where there is no 'house' per se?

Is this another Faux Pas'

  • I have absolutely no problem with this. If your main objective is to win money and to socialize to a 'lesser' extent than this is perfectly fine. I have never been to a home game where someone has forbid the use of electronic devices. Like you said, as long as you are aware of what is going on around you and not holding up the game, totally cool here.
On a seperate note, I would actually prefer some people to listen to their IPOD rather than chat away. Some poker players are sooooo annoying. Hmmm, if you ever see me take mine out while playing, take it as a subtle hint

    stp
  • I just wish i had a discman or an MP3 player. i'd use it. and i dont think it's bad etiquette either.

    thanks,

  • I have no problem. In fact, had mine been charged I was going to wear them at my last tourney.

Most casino's ban the use of electronic devices at the table (cell phone include), not because they hold up the game, but because information could be passed through them without the casino's knowledge. A thread dicussing this can be found here. (I think)
  • When I played regularily, I used to read a book in addition to listeneing to my discman :)

That annoyed people (part of the plan) but it also kept me from being bored.
  • Ipods are so useful in tournaments, allowing you to sit through bad cards with something to do. I really wish they were allowed in the casino's, would be nice to mute out all the casino sounds with your own music
  • as long as you aren't one of those players who has the music turned up super high and ask "what did he bet?" or "who's turn is it?" 20 times during the game. that's what annoys me the most about people who use headphones and do not pay attention. It really slows down the game.

    Yep,

Funny thing is even with the headphones, Im typically the one pointing out the bets and/or directing the play.

I love dealing for this reasopn as it gives me something to do when my cards turn to shiet making me focus on the game. But with the Creative 20G mp3 player I can hum for hours!

I think the $400 I put out for the 20G player was one of the best investments I have made. I highly reccomend it. Now I can keep wearing it thanks to the advice on here.

And Frankly, I'm not too concerned about Casino play until Brantford starts NL or Nl Tourneys, I just hate limit so much now and I suck at it.
  • did not want to start a new thread but when you are playing someone heads up lets say is it a bad etiquette to show your cards when you fold or is that perfectly fine?
  • it is a new thread, but the quick answer is not really, unless you are being obnoxious about it.
