If you only have $200 to take a shot at 1/2 then I wouldn't really follow the advice in my other thread...that is more of a LAG style that increases long-term profits but also greatly increases short-term variance.

With $200 to work with I may actually recommend buying in very short ($50) and playing all in or fold preflop until you double once then adjusting, but it depends on your intentions in the game.

Are you just playing for fun? Are you going to be very upset about losing $200? How does the game play (you have been there before, correct?) -- is it generally 7 people limping in preflop or is there usually a raise and a few callers preflop, a raise and 7 callers preflop?

so not worried if I loose the $200 its "fun money" but in previous sessions its always seeemed a reasonable amount and I have been able to play poker for several hours with it. I dont play reckless and dont intend to just cause its fun money. I see it as a ticket to play a competitive game as best I can.

I cant predict how the game will go or what the players are like. I imagine its typical 2-4 players involved preflop 2-3 make it post flop and play get quite agressive from there (unless everyone is trapping lol)
  • never i mean never enter a pot in early position with a weak ace..just fold..if you pick a spot to be tricky, do it against what you perceive to be good players...ie floating[in position], check raising light, 3 barrels...dont try to hoodwink the clueless...

Don't do any of this with only 200 dollars to play with
  • So I did in fact crush the Home Game tonight - Bought in for $20 cashed $140 .
not overly proud as I totally Donked the biggest pot of the evening, to which I laughed and laughed as I took out 2 Reg Donks in the process.

Will post hands soon... tired and work in the morning :)

  • Congrats you've now made more monies than couchy: )
  • woot Poker night ! feeling excited - really looking forward to it. Planning to go out at 9 and play for 4-5 hours. Im expecting I will play tight aggressive and hoping not to seem too much like a obv no0b at the table. A good result will be walking away with my buy-in back but Im planning to crush.

whats peoples opinions on small pairs (4-8) in early position ? fold ?

depends on stack sizes I suppose and how the rest of the table is playing but, I guess limp. If that's the norm, or make it 3-4x whatever your normal raise is or whatever the normal raise on the table is.

If its a home cash game, their generally quite loose, play it to set mine, low pairs are pretty easy to play, just ABC.

Edit: it's a casino, limp or small raise is fine, no one pays attention and your implied odds are good if you hit a set

See previous comments re: pocket pairs. I will NEVER fold a pair at 1/2 pre-flop if the raise is within the aforementioned range.

TPTK is no good if you are getting a lot of heat. Re: a bet, re-raise in front of you on the flop.
  • Ok so I took a lot of your advice and what I have learned on this forum recently and I did well. I Bought in for $180 and cashed $690 . For me this is a most pleasing result. I was the biggest earner at my table for the night

there were some interesting hands tonight.. Ill post some in the morning but here is my fav

    Hero Raises to 35
BB is all in for 170
    Player 2 folds
    Hero calls
    (player doesnt show)
    River 2H
Player slaps his cards down calling Ahigh flush
    I camly roll over quads...sweet

He had pushed in 3 times before thus with very little to show so I knew he didnt have P3's and if he did Badbeat jackpot time :)
  • I bet you that felt good hitting that duece on the turn. Even better when you hit quads. NH
  • Oh yeah it was beautiful. I also had another big hand where the flop was 8 9 10 rainbow and I held JQ ..cleaned out the same guy again for about $75
  • ok so the specifics of the hands I played are quickly fading in relation to who was where and how much bets where .. my big hands were
    KK ( flop was QJ7 - 4 - 9 ) decent size buddy had a AQ.
JQ as mentioned above buddy had AK - dont know what the fuck he was doing in there
    22 as described
AQsuited spade - buddie folded and I showed - earned great table rep as there was good banter about me most likely bluffing - board was Ah 10s 8s
    pocket10's caught a 10 buddie had 2 pair
pocket JJ lots and lost of callers some raisers I overbet from the button with a crappy flop and took it
6-9 off suit - BB special - caught 2 pair off the flop and buddie missed a straight

all these hands made me $50 or more.

    Most pleasing apsects
    1. I was able to spot weaker players than me and capitalize on them
    2. Never once did I loose a showdown (I may have folded the winning cards a couple of times but they never knew)
    3. I was able to make moves on weak flops as I had a super solid table image
    4. I kept great disapline - playing position, waiting for long periods, keeping sharp watching players - watching every hand even if I wasnt in the hand.

It was a tight table other than a few goofs but I was still extreamly comfortable that I was in no way out classed or out gunned at any point. To be honest I found them predictable.
  • sounds pretty savvy to me
