Professional Poker Tour

When does this get started? And how exactly is it going to work? So far all i know is that top 200 ranked players in the World get invited. But how do they get the rankings?

and what happens to the World Poker Tour when PPT get started?

  • It got started about Winter 2004. its a freeroll league essentially vying for $475K cash and a 25K WPT Champion Bellagio Ticket. top 6 get paid (final table). They have rules implemented like 90 second clock, no glasses etc. If you go to the website you will see how they do qualifications, ie WSOP Winner or WPT Winner and then they have like excemptions where they give a certain few an excemption into the even (just like the most recent PPT where an online qualifier from paradise poker came 6th).

WPT and PPT have no affiliation with each other, and currently PPT has not TV contract. They have 7 events per year (2 so far) and I think it is required to pay 4 or something to retain PPT card (sort of like the PGA except for Poker).
  • I think it will be interesting to see who's left standing once all the dust settles. WPT is one of about 5 televised games right now. I think poker is going to be like porn in that the hoopla will die down, but the industry will stablilize sooner or later.
  • some clarification: the WPT and PPT are affiliated (depending on how you define affiliated) as they are owned by the same body and do share entries into the same final tournament. Former WPT champs and high ranking winners are also granted admission into the PPT based on their WPT record. Also, the PPT final tables will be shown on TV same as the WPT tables.
